SUP project ---- need opinions on dimensions

Alright, I’ve decided to make a SUP as my #4. I’ve read everything in the archives, but I’m still a little up in the air about dimensions. Here’s what I have so far. I’m 6’1" , 195 lbs. I’m thinking 11’ , 21" N x 28.5" W x 18" T x 4 7/8" thick. 5 7/8" nose rocker, 3 3/8" tail rocker. Wide point a few inches ahead of center. I’ve never tried SUP before, so I’m just thinking a generally basic board for small to medium Gulf Coast slop. I’ve attached my APS3000 shots. Please critique and give any recommendations on outline, length, thickness, rocker. I’ve read everything from “keep it flat for gliding” to " 7+ inches of nose rocker so you don’t pearl" , so a little advice in that area would be appreciated. I’ll be using 2 lb EPS and RR epoxy.

You’re on the right track for a fun all arounder… Have fun!!

What type/size stringer should I use? I’ve been using 3mm Komatex/PVC stringers on my under 8’ EPS boards and I’ve read that over 8’ I should use 6mm pvc stringers, but would the width of the SUP necessitate an even thicker stringer? Any thoughts?

Hey there, sounds like your gonna have a sweet board too. Im currently working on one that is gonna be 11x29x5 with a rounded pin in the rear and a fun lookin nose. Im doing a double stringer, probably gonna use a wood product for a more classic feel. Im stoked! What are you gonna do about a paddle? Im gonna do a wood one. Im thinking of following one of the reccomendations by Uncle-D. Still not sure on what wood though, I was thinking a dark strong wood like mahogany in the center and then poplar or something similar on the outside of the shaft, and as for blade prob poplar or bass wood, something strong but light! Im in Jax, but grew up in Bradenton, south of Tampa so this board is gonna be a gulf rider for sure! good luck keep us informed!

Peace,

Anthony

I’m going to make a paddle, too. Probably similar to what you’re doing. How thick of stringers are you going to use? I might try the double or even a triple stringer for the looks.

Ive been digging on roundpins lately, but thats just a me…

but the most important thing about SUP, is the need for a huge $hit eating grin. If you dont have one, youll never make it my man…

Big Kahuna and jrmdds,

I used mahogany and poplar on my first SUP paddle, looks nice but a little on the heavy side (approx. 38 oz.) I’ve been using poplar for my current paddles. I got the weight down to about 28 oz. on my lightest paddle. (pictures and specs in previous posts) I’m currently working on a wood/foam blade paddle to cut the weight even more.

mokulele

Thanks Mokulele, I have been studying your paddle thread and Uncle D’s as well. I went to Lowed today to see what they have in stock and Im thinking of going down the pine wood avenue now. It would be strong, relatively light. Not sure what Im going to use for the blade, prob just something else I find there. I will post after I get done with the build to add to the awsome posts already on paddles. As for stringer size, still not sure, Im going to be cutting the blank and lining up stringers tomorrow, so I will post tomorrow night with the final decision.

Peace,

Anthony
