SUP PU or EPS ???

Hey Guys

I have a bit of a dilemma.

I have been looking at building a SUP board for some time now.

I’ve searched the archives, looked at spacific website, done as much homework as i could.

I finally came up with something i wanted to build at around 11’0 x 29 x 4 1/2 EPS/epoxy.

Went and got a quote from an EPS suppler and it will cost me some $300 AU plus just for the foam.

I then have to glue in a stringer. WOW.

A rang around to see if I could get a PU blank big enough.

Can get one 12’ from QLD but that was $400 plus and then had to get it to Sydney.

The only other option is to get one from Sydney but the biggest I can get is 10’4" x 25 1/2 x 3 3/4.

I can get some foam glued into it to stretch it to about 30’ wide if I wanted and all up it will cost around $175.

That price is much more attractive.

Now here is my dilemma.

Would a 10’4" x 30 x 3 3/4 be big enough for me to use as a SUP.

I would like to go a little longer but thats no big deal and the width is fine.

I am just worried that 3 3/4 is not thick enough.

I haven’t done SUP as yet and generally ride long boards.

I weigh in at just under 100 kgs.

I was thinking that if I get a fairly light density foam and glass it with double 6 oz deck and bottom and lap both layer on each, it should have enough strength.

But will it have enough float and stability being that thin??

This board doesn’t have to be supper strong as it will be mainly for flat water paddling when there are no waves or small ankle bitter for those fun little days.

So with a light density foam and the double 6 oz glass, it shouldn’t be too heavy.

But the 3 3/4 thickness still worries me.

Advise in needed here

Please.

Cheers

3-3/4" sounds pretty thin for a 10-4 SUP for a guy your size. Most of the boards I see around Santa Cruz are a minimum of 4" thick. You could mock up the blank on AKU Shaper and check the volume, but I’m sure some of the SUP shapers here could tell you for sure if it will float you adequately.

Hi, i just post on the SUP , i’m wondering how minimum lengt is required for a SUP ?

About PU or EPS, i just said : EPS !! you can glass with 6 / 6+6 to get a " light weight " SUP , PU will always be very heavy for SUP

I made a Aku shaper template for a 8’2" x 28" x 4 1/4 " , if you calculate the difference of weight betwen PU and EPS , you will sure take an EPS blank !

mds,

I don’t see the delema? You know the materials are going to cost twice to 3 times the amount of a shortboard…It’s 2 x bigger.

Build it right, and be happy. Don’t make an abortion that your just going to get pissed off at. Get the right blank, shape it thick, glass it clean. Then, if it sucks sell it to someone.

is price a choice or a limit ?

If you make a " saucisse " ( in french ) you will do a better board next time !!

I can get lightweight PU blanks that are not that much different to EPS.

Surfblanks has blanks that are 2.2lbs and 2.4lbs

Thats not a lot of difference to the 2lbs EPS.

As for glassing, thats not any problem either.

I do poly and epoxy, and I could even go a lighter glass as you mentioned 6 x 6+6.

Hey mate have you seen the eps blanks from shapers australia?. They have an 11’3’’ that is 27’’ wide and 4 7/32 thick. Being eps it should be floaty. Just a thought mate.

Hey Guys

The quote I got was for 35kg/m3 or 2.18lb cu ft.

The also have 24kg/m3 or I think it is about 1.5lb cu ft.

Would there be a problem using foam this light???

I have also attached an AKU design I did the other day.

I extended it to 11"6’

What do you guys think??

Cheers
