Hey Guys
I have a bit of a dilemma.
I have been looking at building a SUP board for some time now.
I’ve searched the archives, looked at spacific website, done as much homework as i could.
I finally came up with something i wanted to build at around 11’0 x 29 x 4 1/2 EPS/epoxy.
Went and got a quote from an EPS suppler and it will cost me some $300 AU plus just for the foam.
I then have to glue in a stringer. WOW.
A rang around to see if I could get a PU blank big enough.
Can get one 12’ from QLD but that was $400 plus and then had to get it to Sydney.
The only other option is to get one from Sydney but the biggest I can get is 10’4" x 25 1/2 x 3 3/4.
I can get some foam glued into it to stretch it to about 30’ wide if I wanted and all up it will cost around $175.
That price is much more attractive.
Now here is my dilemma.
Would a 10’4" x 30 x 3 3/4 be big enough for me to use as a SUP.
I would like to go a little longer but thats no big deal and the width is fine.
I am just worried that 3 3/4 is not thick enough.
I haven’t done SUP as yet and generally ride long boards.
I weigh in at just under 100 kgs.
I was thinking that if I get a fairly light density foam and glass it with double 6 oz deck and bottom and lap both layer on each, it should have enough strength.
But will it have enough float and stability being that thin??
This board doesn’t have to be supper strong as it will be mainly for flat water paddling when there are no waves or small ankle bitter for those fun little days.
So with a light density foam and the double 6 oz glass, it shouldn’t be too heavy.
But the 3 3/4 thickness still worries me.
Advise in needed here
Please.
