Super short boards

I’d like to hear some opinions on mini-eggs, fish, flying disks and other short surfboard designs. What does a shaper need to consider when looking to create an under-sized surfboard? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to smaller templates? And finally…what’s the best way to maintain floatation and board speed when you sacrafice length? Thanks for all the input.

Flat rocker.

HS, I saw your post on the Harbour site and was going to reply but it didn’t fit Rich’s BB guidelines, which I respect. Anyway, check out Gene Cooper’s Comet on his website cooperfishsurfboards.com. There’s a 5’10" that almost matches the specs in your Harbour post. He uses Walker blanks. I just got a 7’0" Comet and it’s really fun. Good luck…

Ross, Thanks for the information. I checked out the cooperfish website and he has some amazing boards. If it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to hear more about your Comet. How does it handle turns? Easy to paddle? Thanks.>>> HS, I saw your post on the Harbour site and was going to reply but it > didn’t fit Rich’s BB guidelines, which I respect. My shortboard is a 6’4" fish with thruster fin set up. I mostly use it if its small, 4 ft. or less, and not too crowded. The thing I like about it best is that you can pack a lot of turns in a short distance. It has a moderate rocker, and at 2 3/8" thick, to keep the flotation I made the rails rather on the thick side. For a person my age and size (5’5", 135 lbs., 46yrs. old) it paddles quite well. I have it posted on the board showcase under hybrid if you’re interested.

I’d like to build a board similar to yours. What blank did you use and how did you design the bottom? Thanks.

my once fav board was a 5’11 aloha twinni , 19’1/4 wide with wide point up about 3’1 from tail. it had a thick full nose with boxy rails tapering to a thin channeld pintail which gave it good carving ability. u could get heaps of speed by riding more of the nose with its full rails and width gave it pletny of float. and of cousre a flat rocker helps toooo. ive been riding a 6’1 with a similar aoutline but bit thinner. this board tho used a stringerless blank and using strips of timber veneer which taperd out at the tail gives it good flex in the last foot or 2 with an otherwise flat rocker- takes a bit to get used to but on a good wave is lightning fast off the bottom.

How does it handle turns? Easy to paddle? Thanks. Wish I could say I’ve ridden it more than once but whenever I buy a board the surf gods throw out a month’s worth of howling onshores. The first day I was pretty impressed though. It got into waves easily and the ride had this really cool (but hard to describe) rhythm through the turns. It had a lot more drive than I would have imagined. I got mine with the flex fin. I surf in San Francisco where 100-200 yard paddles are the norm. It was fine. Good luck…Ross

I made the flower egg on the board showcase, it’s a realy flat and wide 6.2 wich has old style rails, this makes it loose, almost to loose, so what you need to compensate this is one big fin (maybe even side fins). I recommend a flex fin, size 7.5 or maybe even bigger for a single. The good thing is speed, and the way it skates over the flats while keeping this speed, it s a different way of surfing actualy, more like riding a very short longboard than riding a (normal shortboard). So I think, if youre into tail slides, airs or even steep drops this would not be right shape (disadvantage ?)if you wanna try something totaly different and a lot of fun give it a go. Good luck.
