Super stoked on Swaylocks.....

After working on a couple for friends, I finally got back to making myself a board…

6’2 x 18 x 22 3/4 x 17 diamond tail ( inspired by shorter and wider discussions) concave deck

It’s a fish shape without the pins just a WIDE diamond tail… designed and built around a huge keel type single fin…

Acid splash all around!!! a total of 6 fin boxes ( 3 reg. future boxes, 2 c5’s and a bahne box…)

I just hotcoated and couldn’t wait to show you guys!!!

I am so stoked on this site and everyone who has been so awesome to :

-share advice

-share experience

-Share Humor

-share ego

-make me think about something a little differently

  • share their time!!

This is a collective of reaqlly great individuals who all have a common love and I am very priveleged to be able to share with you all!!!

Will post more pics when done!!!\

Thanks alot guys and gals!!!

-Zosurf

Should definetely qualify as a big boyz board!

Cool you didn’t fish the tail, as diamonds work really well, have good squirt, and lots of surface area.

All those boxes are gonna make you an expert on fin design and setups real soon.

Main thing is, with such a big board, use enough fin, too much better than too little.

Zo, that’s GREAT mate !!

I’m stoked to see someone else : -

making a stubbie-like board,

using multiple fin setups also,

and, in my favourite colours, to boot !!

… NOW I’d REALLY like to see the fin setups… and the bottom view, and what fins you’ve got [ / ? will make ?] for it !

That’s some GREAT work, buddy…stay in touch , eh ?

[maybe we can compare notes / waves ridden , throughout the year ?]

I’d LOVE to see that single keel, particularly !!

cheers mate !

ben

p.s. - concaved DECK…what’s the BOTTOM like , though , I wonder ??

EL CHIPPO!

Thanks for the stoke!!! Here is a pic of the bottom / tail. Just finished the hotcoat on bottom…

Outline of where finbox will go…& where fin boxes are under cloth…

The keel fin for it is 11.5 base x 5.5 height… it is a really trippy fibreglas fin co fin i got off of EBAY for $12!!!

The fin has about 2-3 inches of over lap so it will fit / be positioned over the rear Futures fin box…

I will send you an email / make a post with every fin configuration…

the hull is FLAT FER SPEED!!! this thing 'el move, I have a feelin…

So far the fins I have procured for setups ( SANS PICS) are

  1. 7.75 FU Swoop ( THINK ITS BIG ENOUGH?) or MONDO keel for smaller surf

  2. FT1 futures

  3. FT1 FUTURES W/ MINI TRAILER or Future SB1’s with mondo keel fin

  4. FT1’s with C5’s

  5. mondo keel with SB1’s and C5’s

I enjoy making fin test beds… if you have the room I say throw in fin boxes, saves you from sayin… " Should a put in a couple extra fin boxes."

ALLLOW FOR INFINITE OPTIONS OF EXPERIMENTATION

Got the Idea from my 9’1" infinite option thats in the archives… that fin setup was super fast, mass hold and FUN!!!

too bad you are in OZ ( OR ME IN US) I would love to share rides… I really follow your posts…

Later.

wow !!!

…‘Gatordave’, ‘teamzep’…are you watching this ?? …I think you guys may be interested in this TOO, eh ?

Zo… I’d LOVE to do a board swap with you , if you ever come here !!

I can’t wait to hear how it will go as a 'stubbie with just a single keel ’ ? [ I’ve been wanting to try that setup for a few months now !]

…I REALLY need to make a finbox one for mine…did you see 'oneula’s glass-on one from the 70’s ? THAT’S probably the sort of thing I’ll have a go at making some time …

ben

Chipamundo,

I will be puttin the single finbox in tommorrow......sanding and artwork to follow.... will post pics of the keel fin, the board etc ASAP.

The fin is pretty cool. what is crazy about it is that is was production fin by the looks of it.

I think it was designed as a fin for longboards surfed in a high kelp environment.

Any how… will keep you updated… This board is going to require mass fin tweaking!!! I am gonna have to get back into making some fins…!!!

Later!!!

ps.s here’s a cool pic of waterpower!! Courtesy USCG.

zowie bowie,

how long is that fins unlimited box ?

and is it too far forward for a single keel ? [ie : how far is the tip of the keel swept back from the base…or, IS it ?? ]

The keels I'll make will be different 'apexes' relative to the trailing base edge. [did you see the shot in the 'single keel' thread , from a while ago ? ...a few DIFFERENT ones in the 'quiver shot' there , for sure !]

Obviously, with that extra plug BEHIND the box , too, you can ride it as an ‘inline’ single, a 2 + 1 setup , a thruster, or of course, twinny , quad, or five fin [ ? with canted bonzer mini runners, too ?]

endless combos = endless fun !

        ben

keep up the experimenting…

p.p.s - any idea what the extra weight will be [can you weigh it pre- box cutting, then maybe after all the fins and boxes [5] are in ? just for future reference, and to give us an idea , too ? Thanks mate… it could be a good 'box / plug and fin weight ’ resource entry, perhaps ?]

Chiparoo…

My keel isn’t like those in the pics with th apex @ mid point or similar… I did some quick archive searchin, but its 0344 hrs and the resin droplets on my shoes are tellin me to go to bed but i’ll answer some Q’s before I hit the rack…

how long is that fins unlimited box ?

- 10.5", it should give me alot of options for fin placement, with modification of fins.

is it too far forward for a single keel ?

  • i don’t know that’s why I am experimenting… trailing edge of fin should be no more than 7" from tail of board as it also overlaps the future box that will be behind the FU Box ( Center) I haven’t done this setup before so I’m just slammin finboxes in everywhere so I can figure it out… and allow for Infinite options…

how far is the tip of the keel swept back from the base?

-tip of keel is pretty much at trailing edge of fin. see crappy attached drawing…

any idea what the extra weight will be [can you weigh it pre- box cutting, then maybe after all the fins and boxes [5] are in ? just for future reference, and to give us an idea , too ?

-I couldn’t tell you as the board has just been hot coated and it wouldn’t be a correct representation of a weight difference if I weighed it now…I still have to install FU box & sand in addition I don’t have an accurate enough scale at home ( where I sand) ( I glass at work shape / sand @ home)

take it sleazy!!!

off to bed to count " ZEDS" as you say?

I’ll let you know how it goes thouigh

heres a bad paint draw of the fin…from memory( i don’t have er with me)

CHiP,

Seven Mary Three on location???

Heres a pic of the fin, not too far off from my drawing… 11 in base x 5.75 height.

think its big enought to ride on its own???

I’ll post more when I’m done. Just threw in the FU Box.

I’ll sand tommorrow…

Pardon the low qual pic… have a good one.

hi zoloft !

thanks for posting that fin shot…gives me a good idea of the outline. Is it a fairly thick fin ?

What size waves will you be riding it in ? And … sucky, or fat waves, mainly ? [ ie: reef / point breaks, or beachies ?]

I’d definately give it a try on its own. [ And maybe, take a small bag of side fins to the beach with you too, so you can add them if it feels a bit slidey. ]

I remember, from that ‘Surfer’ mag single keel article, that some of the keels were up to 8" deep !! They WERE being used on 7’ - 8’6" really pinny guns, at big Bells and Winkipop originally, though…so, different designs / ? intentions? to what we are looking at with our “stubbies”, perhaps!

This is only MY personal experience, but I’ve found with a wider tailed ‘Stubbie’, a deeper fin with a slightly ‘wider’ base , has helped hold the tail in , in the absence of thruster front fins. [Six of my boards are single fins, remember. And all my ‘other’ boards, except one [glassed on] twinny have the “multi fins” option… ie: front plugs, back fin box.]

Some ‘mini keels’ of a similar shape to your single keel could be an interesting starting point for experiments ! [I’ve ridden a " three keel setup" on my fish a couple of times now]

ben

p.s. I also like these side ones, and setup too… [with thanks to Dick Van Straalen’s website]

hi Zo !

here’s a diamond tail with a single keel which Andy , a friend of Lucas and Gil’s, has. [I’ve never actually MET Andy, but have been in contact with him for a year or two now, and he has some different boards !] I always enjoy having a chat with him about boards from the 60s and 70s he has !

According to what he wrote on the back of the photo, this one is 5’11 x 19 x 3" , a Pat Morgan …

oops …see below [NEXT post, sorry !]

hi again Zoman !

here’s the shot ! Andy’s diamond tail…5’ 11 x 19 x 3" Pat Morgan single keel

    .... ben

Mr. Chipfish,

ZOLOFT???

DON"T GET ME STARTED!!!! I Don't " NEED TO FIT IN", Surfing is my ZOLOFT>>> no offense taken...

I mainly ride a pointbreak, but I don’t design with that in mind… I try and keep all my boards well rounded to conditions… with the exception of my mini guns…

I am Gonna sand right now and I’ll post pics in 2-3hrs on the fins all setup and rearin to go.

Thanks for the updates… I was thinkin the keel wouldn’t work too well in too big a surf.

Here the question I was gonna ask before I got started, but I didn’t and I went with it…

What would it be like to setup that keel fin as an assymetrical??? with a quad cluster on the opposite side. I was thinkin it woulld be cool down the line… also with what I have setup already, could I put another box in for assymetrical setup using the existing sides as the complementing fin…?

Just brainstorming chip, you seem to be the man to share these thoughts with!!!

Well, Off to sand…

Sorry buddy…you lost me there, with the opposite sides, existing side and complimenting fin ??

Perhaps if you could scan a drawing of what you intended ?

cheers…

  ben

…just on the [‘symmetrical’] “quad” setup, though, those four ‘plugs’ ARE pretty close together…I wonder if it would almost be worth putting in an fcs or whatever plug further back, and closer to the rail ? …just my .00002

Chip,

all done,

See the PM..... here's some low res pics... more to come tommorrow!!!!!

WOWIE ZOWIE, ZO ZO BOY!!

…to help me get my head around THIS setup ,

…can I have the measurements from the ‘point’ [apex] of the diamond tail to the back of each ‘slot’ in each box / plug , please ?

thanks !

ben

[that way , I’ll be able to compare it with where MINE all are on my fish …yours has one more fin than mine , though !]

hey Ben, i tried that board of Andrew’s once, not ideal conditions but it was enough for me to know i didn’t like it. it felt really weird. maybe if i rode it a lot for long enough i would have gotten used to it and enjoyed it, it may have even become my favourite board, but i don’t get to surf enough to go through that. i know what i like and it wasn’t that.

didn’t Wayne Lynch surf those things almost exclusively in the 70’s for a few years? that would explain the Bells and Winki connection.

i should add that Andrew actually liked the board, but then again he thought the red blob was ok too.

update : -

Andy , when I spoke to him last night, seemed fairly keen for me to have that board, when I mentioned I’d swap the 'Wilderness S-deck hull ’ for one of his boards

[I, however, had the M.P. shaped Joe Larkin “stubbie” in mind , not that diamond tail or the 'red blob ']

*** note to self…post the 'red blob ’ on sways for ALL the world to see !

…maybe in that ‘funky tail’ [‘assymetrical’] thread ? ***

ben

yep, Luke… as well as Wayne Lynch, Nat Young ALSO rode the single keel . In the movie / video / d.v.d [now] “Crystal Voyager”…THAT keel Nat has is absolutely MASSSIVE !!! [ Mind you , that board he is riding it on is pretty long and spear-like , too !]
