Suppose...

Suppose the Surfing Fairy descended from high atop a sub-divided hill in sunny San Clemente and waved a magic wand to this effect: All surfboards in the world would now and forevermore be 7’6" softboards, either single fin or “thrusters”. Design and material changes are out of the question. The same population conditions continue to exist, at least at the start. Would you still go out? Would you want or need a leash? Why do you surf?

the water washes my brain clean. it’s my cocaine, my escape from everything. I think of nothing in the water, nothing except the water. I’ll take it anyway I can get it. matter of fact, I’ve slipped into a funk that I believe has spawned from two+ months of no surf.

Ghunt – Hey guys, I don’t like the rocker in my new 7’6” Softboard tri-fin. Any suggestions? Jim Phillips – Check out my new video series, “How To Warp More Rocker Into Your 7’6” Softboard Using Only The Sun.” Chris Rf,Fs – Guys, the modulus of elasticity of a 7’6" Softboard at 44 degrees centigrade while positioned at longitude 44 degrees 7 minutes–latitude 81 degrees 29 minutes, is approximately PSI 1.6 X 106 ASTMD-780. Local Moron – What the fuk are you talking about, you good-for-nothing piece of sh#t??? Chris RF,Fs – Modulus of Elasticity is a physical property of the prestressed foam that is directly related to how the tendon will elongate while being tensioned. This is important because elongation measurements on a 7’6” Softboard (which is my board of choice these days) are used as a check of applied forces during tensioning of the interior forces. Local Moron – F&ck you , you good-for-nothing piece of sht!!! Foamrubberdust – I was cruising the beach the other morning at 6 AM, and I swore I saw a guy with a 7’6” Softie on the roof of his car! Any idea who made it? Herb Spitzer – If it was a 7’6” Softboard, Foamy, it was probably one of mine. Rob Brown – Stuff it, Herb. It had to be a Dale Solomoson 7’6” inflatable. Invaluable for traveling when you don’t want anyone to know you have a 7’6” Softboard on the airplane. Hey! I’m making a flex-tail next week, when my two 7’6” Softboard blanks come in. Any ideas on long it should be, guys? Paul Gross – Don’t be chump, Rob. If it’s a flexy, go with a Greenough thing…around 7’6”. Halcyon – Will it have fins, Rob? Rob Brown – You betcha, Ritchie. Either one or three. The board is going to be 7’6” or so. What do you think? Halcyon – Best to use something of a composite nature. Soft foam and sponge rubber laminated together. Guys rip around here in ‘Cruz on ‘em. Paul Jensen – Check out the Swaylock Resource section under “7’6” Softboards” for my airbrushed wood grain finishes. John Mellor – Really cool stuff, Paul. Post more pics if you can. Nels – Yeah, way cool, Paul. Swaylock – Please note, every category in the Resource section is listed as ”7’6” Softboard.” I recommend typing in “7’6” Softboard,” and then seeing where it takes you. Harvard – Cool site, Swaylock. You da man! Sluggo – Yeah, Swaylock, way cool! Don’t know how we would talk about design like this in any other room. Cleanlines – Yeah! Maui Laird – Any of you design guys tried towing into Jaws with a 7’6” Softboard??? Noodle – Yeah, Laird, I have. They’re OK, but the 7’6” Softboard I had on Maui a couple of years ago was better. Kokua – Really, Noodle? I thought the whole 7’6” Softboard thing died in the Islands when the 7’6” Softboard revolution hit back in ‘67…

…I can’t stop laughing…my sides hurt,Herb

…I can’t stop laughing…my sides hurt,Herb Yeah not only that! I saw some surfing fairies one time at Venice Beach. It was a real queezy scene so I didn`t chill there long enough to find out if the fairy dudes were into softies. Kinda looked like they were.

…I can’t stop laughing…my sides hurt,Herb I graciously left out the post where Herb Spitzer excuses himself from the 7’6" softboard discussion so he can spend some time opening up his old posts to get the hit numbers up…

That is classic… It wouldn’t funny it it wasn’t so true… Paul http://www.hollowsurfboards.com

Paul, dude, now that was classic … I would gladly buy you a beer or 5 at the Tres Pinos Bar & Grill in Moss Landing anytime ! Chris Perry

Hey man cut that 7’6" in half and then you might have something! Just leave it in the sun man it’ll flatten right out! Then it’ll be sick man! Fins? I don’t need no stinking fins man! I just want to skim. Get those stinking fins out of here! Fins are for you guys that can’t run no more. Why don’t you put one on the top of your board you kook – maybe it’ll keep your ass from fallin’ off all the time. Chew glass man! Seaya  Rich

O.K., I think I was on that planet once. We landed, I had packed 2 cheapie boogie boards for trade wampum. (disguised as padding for my luggage, duct taped to the side of my suitcase). I rode one of them the first day to the point of pulling off stand up bottom turns. One of the local Ticas (what planet was that again?) offered me a “surfboard” which turned out to be closer to a Sunfish sailboat hull. Eventually I progressed or proved my worth to have some local guy offer me the pick of his quiver. That proved to be a clincher, first set wave and he wanted it back. Can we opt for a high performance surfmat in this dream Nels? Tom S. P.S. on the same trip down to C.R. I was taking a DSS dish to my dad who was living as an ExPat down there. We got to the customs guys and they were probing the stuff I was packing. My declaration on the SAT Tv dish was that it was a rice cooker------they bought it and waived the customs fees…tom>>> Hey man cut that 7’6" in half and then you might have something! Can we > opt for a high performance surfmat in this dream Nels?>>> Tom S. After I got through laughing at all this - probably better responses than I should have expected for snidely tossing in “softboard” to this group - I thought I should reword it from softboard to “6’2” Thruster", the whole idea being this: If we suddenly had no diversity in equipment and none on the horizon, would we still go out? And when I thought 6’2" Thruster I can answer for myself very easily, and much easier than if it were a softboard…I’d only go out if I really had to, and I don’t know when that would be. A little learning experience for me there, and probably brought on by that wicked surfmat. My boards are covered with dust and freaking dryer vent lint balls. The wax is melted into the shape of the sandcoated baggie it’s been in. The mat is cracking my brain, obviously, but in the water it feels like I’m laying on top of Buffy the Vampire Slayer rather than some surfboard, and I can’t stop… So Tom, yes we can add this option to the dream.

Somehow along the way I got L-O-S-T. So I`m under 30, and sorta new here, but not stupid, right? Is this one of those “inside” Swaylocks threads? What are you guys talking about? Whatsa Buffy??? the mat??? Swaylocks needs a GLOSSARY with color photos for newbies!

Why do you surf? Theraphy. Nothing that some good surf can’t cure. regards, Håvard

I swear I saw the Magicman out ripping on a 5’11" softtop fish…now where did he get that?

…Way FUNNY!!!I even copied this one!!!THIS ONE GETS BEST > COMEDY AWARD,FORESURE.Herb I nominate the “Future Swaylocks” post to go in the “classics” area, next to Herb’s diaper filler idea…

I nominate the “Future Swaylocks” post to go in the > “classics” area, next to Herb’s diaper filler idea… What’s really classic about this thread is that there are a group of board builders out there that are pushing the limits of softboard technology. We make the soft thruster fin setups used on Doyles, BZ’s, INTs and several other softboards. We also have a new composite semi-rigid thruster setup in development. While it’s not the only vehicle available, as suggested in this thread, it is a viable percentage of the overall market. And progress is being made on design evolution.

…I just invented a hardboard out of polyurethane foam and covered it with polyester resin and fiberglass,It’s works way better that those 7-6 softboards.I took it down to SurferMag.com reef and the lifeguard wouldn’t let me take it out, sighting, that it wasn’t a REAL softboard and it was too small(6-6).So I traveled down the coast to Surfingmag.com beach, and the guard there said if you want to ride that thing here you have to be an advertiser or have a booth in the ASR show, with our banner up.I ended up at the river just me and my hardboard.I got all kinds of snickers, laughs, and what the F"** IS THAT FORS.After my session a few open minded people came up to me and asked if they could get a hardboard stating,“that hardboard is unreal, can I get one,you were cooking man!” …Sadly,I have been in prisoned for building w/o a permit, even though I was in no violation of any laws.I face the gas chamber next week, two days before the serial killer R. Ramerez’s book is due for release. …All is not lost,I here Rusty,Stewart,B.Jones, and Harbour intend on building hardboards to corner a new frontier in the surfing market.Herb

Dear Surboarders, I let my little Billie take one of the soft surfboards in the ocean yesterday and now he has a nasty bruise on his bottom. There is a bully named Linden down the street that rides one of the buggy boards. He is mean and very aggressive. He always talks to Billie about what happens to him on those horrible big waves and that he wants to ride a surfboard some day but I think they are just too dangerous. I can’t imagine what his parents are thinking. You fellows just scare me to death when you ride the hard pointy surfboards so close to each other! I’m afraid someone will get tangled up or even choke on the stringy things you tie to your feet. The wind is blowing very hard and the sun is awfully bright here today so Billie’s staying in to heal his bruise. I won’t let him surf any more unless he takes a mat out or goes body surfing. If we see any surfboards we go to another place. Bye-bye be very careful now boys. Love, Mumie
