my surf-mobile is a Toyota Matrix. i can fit a longboard up to 9’5" inside the car, stack boards 6-high, and still have room for another person behind me and all our stuff in the back. for my 9’6"+ boards, i’ll either leave the rear (hatch) window open a bit, or put 'em on the roof racks. i get 30 mpg around town, 36 mpg on the highway. drove it round-trip between south florida and california last last summer without a single hiccup (except for when i hit that ginormous pothole in texas and the hubcaps on the passenger side flew off…but i blame that on texas…not the car). only need to change the oil every 6,500 miles or so.
I have an L series subaru,9’4’’ fit inside, bigger boards go on roof.Good on gas, great on beach and reliable all round!!Dream vehicle would be diesel 4wd van, lwb!!
herb-hope you are ok.bummer about truck for sure.a couple friends have those honda elements-lotsa room inside( can put longboards in it) all vinyl so easy to clean and great gas mileage.a vw bus would be second on list…
For what it’s worth, my next rig is going to be a Honda Element. Durable, mostly plastic interior, good mileage and a 10’ fits on edge down the center and leaves the passenger sit useable. My present F-150 is getting clapped out and a gashog deluxe so I have been thinking about this for a while and checking out alternatives.
my 1990 toyota pick up has 560 000 ks. onit and still going strong . if i were to get a new one it would be a 4wd tacoma 4 cyl. . they dont have them in canada but i heard they have them in the states? anyone know if you can get a toyota with a 4 cyl. and be 4wd?
I had a '72 vw bus/van.agree about gas mileage-not bad, not great, but a pretty utilitarian vehicle for sure and with the rear engine, gearing and weight all right there they have good off road capabilites…
Howzit Matt,The 72 VW bus/van still had the older upright engine I think and they got a lot better MPG then the one’s with the pancake engine. I have owned probably close to 20 VW’s in my life and woudl love to have a 67 or before again, great MPG and easy to fix. Only problem is the cost is out of the world for one these days. When the 67 came out the cost of a new one was $2273.00 which included a radio ( only option for a van ) now they run about $ 15,000 for one in good condition.Aloha,Kokua
Have you seen Paul Jensen’s Sprinter van with the handmade interior modifications? I think they might be pricey but his is plenty roomy enough to live in and Paul said it gets 30 mpg.
I like the Matrix…Also looking at the Yaris hatchy.
I have to keep in mind; for my family and dogs as well as a commuter bucket, surf buggie, etc. .
There’s alot of options out there, and I thought you guys are on top of just about everything, so why not ask the experts.
The CHP officer was amazed that I was so calm after what I had just experienced…lol…I just gave him the ol’ Jeff Spicoli line…“Huh,danger is my business”…The officer actually laughed.
This is probably a good time to have something so tramatic happen …yet… leave me w/ this excellent opportunity.
