The movie Gidget came out in 1959. By 1960 it had ruined the surfing experience, as it had been. Prior to that there were no wannabe’s. You were, or you were not, a surfer. Nobody posed, or postured.
Howzit Mahana, Actually it seems Hollywood does better doing satires on surfing then the real thing. Lets face it almost every surf spot has guys like that hanging in the parking lot drinking but never surfing. Thought it was funny as heck.Aloha,Kokua
Hate to be the contrarian but it looks kind of funny to me…
Come on guys. Get over it. Where’s your sense of humor? That whole surfer dude thing’s been around since Jeff Spicoli. Did it ruin the surfing experience for you?
Does every police film accurately portray the lives of police officers? How about the military in war movies? I’m a school teacher and every time I see a classroom in a Hollywood movie I crack up. All the kids are oh so well behaved. What a load of crap. But so what? Should I report it to my teacher’s union?
And who hasn’t felt that, “I need a wave” feeling??? I had it this morning and paddled out in some seriously sub par waist high dribble.
Finally, I hate to say it, but I do have friends who, to some degree or another, have that surfer speak, dude brah, lingo. So what?
You’ve got to be kidding comparing Penn/Spicoli to McConokook. McConokook is a complete tool in every way. He does not surf, but tries to project that image. He is not about surfing - he’s an atrocity. Go bang some bongos in the nude McConokook!
- There is one 2x Acadamey Award Winner who surfs regully wo never talks about it like these other attention starved losers.
OK - you’ve piqued my curiosity. Who is this 2X Academy Award winner who surfs regularly? By the way, “Point Break” is the best surfer/bank robber/buddy cop movie ever. Hollywood could do it right if they just follow the formula in “Point Break”. Yee-agh Duuudde.

I don’t know anything about this McConokook. I think I saw one of his movies on an airline flight but can’t really remember.
Now, Sean Penn’s matured into a great actor. But was Sean Penn a hard core surfer when he did “Fast Times”? Does it really matter whether an actor playing a surfer really surfs? It doesn’t to me. With all due respect to his unquestionable surfing skills, Shane Dorian was kind of painful to watch in “In God’s Hands.” I’d just as soon have seen a non surfing actor playing that role.
As far as comparing this movie to Gidget, it’s a different time. Surfing’s already been mainstream for quite some time. Crowds are already horrendous. Will this movie make the crowd even worse at Malibu?? I surf there occasionally and can’t really see it getting worse. Or I should say, what’s the difference between five guys on a wave and six?
Dude, if you take the movie seriously, for sure you’re gonna harsh you mellow. So , you know , like, just mellow out, dude.

The crowds may not be that bad, I’m sure most of his fans are women… Or have alternative lifestyles.

I guess anybody who started surfing after 1959 is part of the problem.

Not anybody, just the were not’s
The surfer in modern history is just a derivative of the beachboy who was a derivative of the original beachbums whose only intent each day was to take from others to make an easy living and have fun versus comforming to the missionary puritan ethic of a hard days labor. Everything since has been a further media induced permutation of that original digression.
I can’t see anything about surfing that would make me proud of it.
Its really individual decandance at its purist and possibly why things gravitate towards it when there’s a sense of loss of direction.
The problem with most folks who think they are surfers is they can’t see past the tips for their noses for some reason.
maybe its from the endorphin stimulus and the fassociated addiction.
In reality,
surfing is probably just a cooler form of golf.
The industry who provides for it all is probably rooting for Surfer Dude’s success while those sitting selfishly in the lineup using those same end products are badmouthing it.
Only a naked body surfer can say otherwise.
It’s a big ocean out there
Aloha oneula,
Well said. In my opinion it’s just an attitude thing not a personal ownership, or game locked thing. You can always find a way to Enjoy the ride!

Okay… now that was lame. No, GAY would be a better word for that trailer.
You think that’s GAY? This one is truely GAY:

This is somewhat less GAY:
but GAY non the less.
Can’t wait 'till Hollywood and Madison Avenue grow tired of surfing and move on to the next big thing.
Another lame “surf movie”. Should play well in Ohio and the other rectangular states. I agree, the Stiller movie could be fun, let’s hope it isn’t another like this one. “Ass clown” indeed.
i agree…actually…
just take it as a spoof…
like major league…slapshot…etc…
you wanna watch something really sad…
watch “who killed the electric car”

Back in the late 70’s I spent a lot of time surfing up on the north shore. The lifeguards at Sunset used to have a big cooler near their tower and drink beer all day. These were the some of the most respected watermen at that time. Even though they drank a lot, they saved a lot of lives. I think Butch was a major influence for those guys.
