I want to get a hold of some “surf music”. Not really sure what makes surf music. Thought the Swaylock’s community could help/offer some suggestions…Thanks.
west coast/cool jazz-i.e. my favorite pre- and post surf music includes artists like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, maybe some miles davis, etc.
reggae is also good and so are the blues
surf music is really the music that gets you in the surfing mood though so it could really be anything
hi Gary !
good to hear from you !
My personal preference in surf movie soundtrack is probably guitar instrumentals , for the most part …
same with ‘music to surf by’…
andrew kidman , neil purchase, stevie ray vaughan , tommy emmanuel , joe satriani, that kind of ilk …the taylor steele movie soundtracks don’t 'do it ’ for me , I’m afraid …neither do the beach boys or that era .
But that’s just me.
“wedding cake island” , by midnight oil , is the kind of “feeling” I like, I guess !!
ben
p.s. - how’s your “stingray” surfing going ?

Hi Gary,
Surf music is whatever you want it to be.
Some of my favorites are soudtracks from Morning of the earth, September Sessions, Shelter and Thicker than Water… Chip may not agree

Depends on the era I suppose. For me, Ray Charles (Wha’d I Say), Beatles (Sgt. Peppers), Crosby Stills…
(Southern Cross), Mason Williams ( Classical Gas), any Christopher Parkening. Almost anything except Dick Dale, Jan & Dean, or The Beach Boys. For me " Surf Music", is whatever set the mood of the time. Example, North Shore 1963: Louie, Louie. That was the first music I heard when I got off the boat in Honolulu. It defined that time for me.
I like Hapa…among others. Aquafiend, I think it would be appropriate for you to be a fan of the Blue Stingrays…
Jazz and jazz variants, for the most part, are my favorites.
Charlie Byrd- The Guitar Artistry of CB
John Scofield- A Go Go
Tommy Guerrero- Loose Grooves and Bastard Blues
George Benson
Stan Getz- Best of the West Coast Sessions
etc, etc.
Van Morrison- Moondance
…there’s plenty more!
Anything that gives me goosebumps, violins cellos Motorhead…
Magazine played really interesting pushy tempo music, post punk, very motivating for me anytime.
'Back to nature, I can’t go on like this.
I want to walk where the power is.’ (Howard DeVoto)
aquafiend65,
Surf Music, can realy be anything. For me, it’s whatever puts me in that mood to grab my board and head out. something that makes me day dream about the ocean & surfing, like a drug or aphrodisiac. Or what you would fill a homemade surf film of your own with.
Hear are a few for me.
Super Session by Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills : Classic Rock / Blues
Elastic by Joushua Redman : Jazz / Funk
James Brown : Soul
Pink Floyd : Classic Rock

For actual reverb-drenched guitar, try Dick Dale, Los Straitjackets, The Mermen, Man or Astro Man.
For me is Ben Harper or Jack johnson! They kick ass…
Kyuss, Brant Bjork and the Bros, Fu Manchu, Alabama Thunderpussy … anything heavy and loud.
Hendrix- or whatever was in the last surf video/film i saw.
