Surf / paddleboard

I’m thinking about making a 12’ surf / paddleboard… Any thoughts re: > dimensions & other variables…>>> Paul Dave Parmenter shapes them (around $1500 and go directly through him, Makaha, if you can, not Moondoggies in SLO), so does Gordon Quigg (have no idea how to get in touch with him, and I think Eaton might as well (although he seems to either shape paddleboards or surfboards), Skip Frye shapes really longboards but they aren’t really combos – apparently they are a bit more complicated that just a pulled out longboard?? The Surfers Journer had an article about Dale Hope a few years ago, in it they have a photo and a little description of the surf/paddleboard Joe and Gordon Quigg made for him. The dimensions on Dale’s board are in the article, if you can’t find it let me know (I also think those dimemsions are somewhere in Swaylocks archives) I surfed an 11’6" Hank Warner shape this summer at Tourmaline – the closest thing I have ridden to a surf/paddleboard. From what I can remember it was about 4" thick, 24" wide, boxy rails and minimal rocker. You could catch a ripple with it, it paddled really fast (not as fast as a paddleboard…at least not as fast as my Joe Bark 17’ Unlimited). Good luck with the board, I was thinking of trying the same. I’m thinking about making a 12’ surf / paddleboard… Any thoughts re: > dimensions & other variables…>>> Paul Hey Paul, I built a surf/paddle combo for a customer in Ojai, he surfs Pidus Point a lot, long paddles out. It was a 12’1", out of the Clark 12’3", I shaped a typical paddle board entry, V for the first foot or so, running to a roll for a few more feet (we are talking lots of board) into a conventional retro style of longboard middle to the tail. He is a hella’of a big guy and wouldn’t ever get to the nose anyway, I pulled it into about 15", this way the boards still had so curve in it. The blank came with way too much nose rocker, I knocked it down from the deck. With blanks like these at 5" thick, there is already 5" of nose rocker if the deck is dead flat. Add some and the bottoms look like Elf shoes or you leave the nose 3" thick at the tip with no foil at all. He says it is a great riding board, it can get around falling sections and of course has a lot of drive (what would you expect from 12" of rail and 40 pounds?) But the one thing is, there is a whole lotta’ foam to deal with, whew!!!Jim needs to sleep now.

A friend has a 12’6" X 23" X 5 1/4" Parmenter “Makaha Machine” that he rides when it gets big. It looks to me like a Bing Pipeliner-ish “retro-gun” template (see #72 in board section.) Lots of nose rocker (he used the 12’8" tandem blank with custom rocker) and tough to turn but he’s a big guy. I’ll post a picture soon.

Tim - I went ahead and posted photos and specs on the board. If Mike OKs it, it should be #146. Yes, Jeff definitely surfs it in bigger surf. As far as I know, he doesn’t actually use it as a paddle board but Dave Parmenter paddled a similar design successfully in the Molokai Channel race and did well overall even against open class paddle boards. I know the specs sound a bit extreme for a surfboard at 12’6" long and 5.25" thick, but it is a beautifully foiled design that would fool you if you were just eyeballing it.

What a beautiful board! Looks like it would be fun to ride and paddle. Has he ever taken it out in smaller surf just for kicks?

hey John! since I spent several years up there and know most of the spots, > I was wondering where Jeff surfs that thing when it’s big? I saw that guy out on that log on a head high day at outside Big Drakes and believe me if he ever went out in big surf, he’d die. He was paddling for waves and missing them, ON THAT BOARD. When he did catch a wave he tried to trim and then jump off when the wave got even half way critical. Thank god he had a leash. A true menace to navigation. Nice looking board though.

Matt - I’d rather not mention any place specific on Jeff’s behalf. I rode my 11’6" at the Overhead (or is that On-the-Head?) last week and I swear I caught a couple that I don’t think I would have had much luck on with anything less. A guy came in with a giant Brewer tri fin complaining that even he had trouble making waves that day. For me, a basic paddle in, survive the drop and try to scoot around the soup. It wasn’t Waimea or Maverick’s but there were some bombs coming through.
