hahaha that's really what I sell mostly, could you have guessed? I do have a few surfboards, mainly just for atmosphere. And I sell old skateboards and boogie boards occasionally, just sold a pumgo skateboard for $60 that I picked up at a yardsale for $5.
It was actually her idea originally to get a surf-theme going, I guess cuz she could see that I was always looking for anything surfing related when I went with her to yardsales /estate sales anyway. I didn't think it would really work here, but decided to give it a go.
This is Bakersfield, although we do have two surf shops in town, the aloha shirts are as close as most of the antique mall shoppers get to surfing LOL. And we were surprised they do better than we anticipated.
If I ever get a couple nickels to rub together, I'm gonna build some decent display racks for the shirts and skateboards, and expand the surf theme to a bigger portion of her space. I've already got a couple of really cool antique carved pillars that will make a great entrance.
I've pretty much taken over managing the retail area for her - its large, 1400 sq. ft., and includes the area at the top of the stairs. So I'm picturing these two pillars (they are 7' tall, and the ceiling is 7', so they should just fit) centered on the stairwell as you walk up, leading into a surf-themed area in the middle of her store, maybe even get a few vintage longboards, and some real surf memorabilia, as the budget allows.
I'm thinking it would be a cool place for any surfers passing through (hey, everyone passes thru bakersfield at one time or another!) to stop and check out. The surf shops in town don't deal with used boards or memorabilia, so I wouldn't have much competition. Wavelengths does have a very cool vintage board collection on display, but its just for show, none of it is for sale.
Just kind of a dream of mine at this point.
