"surf shop" upstairs at the antiques mall

My remodeling business has been moving slower than the line at the Department of Motor Vehicles - so I've been helping my wife with her books / antiques & collectibles business.

I commandeered part of her retail space at the antique mall, and set it up as a kinda "surf shop", well, surf-theme is more like it, and I've been doing pretty good with it.  Not exactly big bucks, but every little bit helps, and I'm having fun too!  I pick this stuff up at yardsales and estate sales.

Thanks pridmore and woody, I'll look into that picture thing, might be a possibility!  My wife wants me to build little wooden surfboards to sell, but I can't see it being cost-effective, the pictures sounds like a better deal.

Resinhead - weirder things have happened, I'll let you know if I find one.  So far I've found a Harley Davidson aloha shirt, a Kracker Jacks aloha shirt pajama top, a Hawaiian Punch aloha shirt, and a Mr. Potato Head one that says "Mr. Potato Head picks his nose" LOL!  So a Buck Owens one doesn't sound like too much of a stretch.  Shoot, even the Beatles were Buck Owens fans!

I'll keep my eyes open for this one, maybe it'll show up at a yard sale one day...

Nice space Huck! …but do you have any hawaiian shirts for sale?

hahaha that's really what I sell mostly, could you have guessed?  I do have a few surfboards, mainly just for atmosphere.  And I sell old skateboards and boogie boards occasionally, just sold a pumgo skateboard for $60 that I picked up at a yardsale for $5.

It was actually her idea originally to get a surf-theme going, I guess cuz she could see that I was always looking for anything surfing related when I went with her to yardsales /estate sales anyway.  I didn't think it would really work here, but decided to give it a go.

This is Bakersfield, although we do have two surf shops in town, the aloha shirts are as close as most of the antique mall shoppers get to surfing LOL.  And we were surprised they do better than we anticipated.

If I ever get a couple nickels to rub together, I'm gonna build some decent display racks for the shirts and skateboards, and expand the surf theme to a bigger portion of her space.  I've already got a couple of really cool antique carved pillars that will make a great entrance.

I've pretty much taken over managing the retail area for her - its large, 1400 sq. ft., and includes the area at the top of the stairs.  So I'm picturing these two pillars (they are 7' tall, and the ceiling is 7', so they should just fit) centered on the stairwell as you walk up, leading into a surf-themed area in the middle of her store, maybe even get a few vintage longboards, and some real surf memorabilia, as the budget allows.

I'm thinking it would be a cool place for any surfers passing through (hey, everyone passes thru bakersfield at one time or another!) to stop and check out.  The surf shops in town don't deal with used boards or memorabilia, so I wouldn't have much competition.  Wavelengths does have a very cool vintage board collection on display, but its just for show, none of it is for sale.

Just kind of a dream of mine at this point.

great stuff, I like it alot…if I was nearby , I’d call in and find something to buy for sure…

Great stuff Huck! You should frame up and mat some of your photos, just an idea...but you sure have a good eye. I bet some photos of your boards would work well too! People decorating with a little "surf culture" theme might be inclined to buy some...anyway very cool! Good Luck!

if you ever find a Buck Owens hawaiian shirt, I’m your man. that would be a dream come true.
