Surf Support Unit (aka Teardrop Trailer)

Relatively inexpensive digs to support my surfing habit. Check it out:

What with all of the amazing craft talent on this list, I thought the idea might resonate with some. Here is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in much more info on how to build one of these.

Mine has 110V AC & 12V DC. It’s all powered off of mains power for now, which will charge a 12 deep cycle battery for the DC, but addition of a solar panel is starting to interest me. Good for campground or boondocking with just enough convenience to make things awfully comfortable, but with little mass-of-stuff. I hope to have it rolling to the Florida East Coast by April. Meantime, I seem to be gravitating towards stealth camping when I manage to get away.

Cheers,

John

Absolutely awesom project!!!  I assume this just gets mounted on an inexpensive utlity trailer like you’d get from Home Depot or Harbor Freight so that it is street legal???

Nice teardrop.

Here is mine:

I built it last Winter/Spring and we travelled from Vancouver Island (Canada) down the West Coast to California in the summer.

The tricky thing is that I have three kids that have to fit in there as well!  So the top pops up for standing room and loft area.  Here is an early unfinished picture showing the top up:

When I built it I wanted to be able to use the trailer separately so I made corner jacks to lift the teardrop unit on and off the trailer.

Here is the trailer, you may notice the departure from regular wheel/tire combo and axle configuration as well!

Here is the teardrop going on the trailer the first time:

We had a great trip and the trailer towed and worked well for us.  I really splurged and used LED lighting throughout for energy savings.  This allows me to also power up the flat screen and sound system for a reasonable amount of time off the deep cycle.   I decided not to include a 110V AC system because we are able to charge off the vehicle and try “stealth camp” also!

The rear kitchenette is not quite finished.  I do have a propane oven/stove unit but the cabinets and water system is not quite done.

I spent so much time on this project that the other projects I had wanted to work on, namely a few new boards for the trip suffered, but all in all a success.

I echo the shout out for the mikenchell forum the people on their really helped me out.

Here is my build thread if you want to see the whole build:

Andy - That’s a heck of a TD you built! Custom built trailing arms, aluminum framework and a loft. Rugged, and very nice. Love the turbo diesel Mitsu.

Mako - Yes, thats the idea though I’ll make my own frame with storebought Dexter Torqueflex axles.

I am very much looking forward to parking the trailer somewhere for about a month this year. Hopefully the surf will cooperate.

Nearly finished. This will make a nice upgrade for our surfing trips. The longer, the better.
