…I would be interested to see any photos people may have of the foil [distribution of thickness] on their boards , please ?
cheers !

Sorry it’s not quite side on Ben.
Sorry you had to put up with my ugly mug at the same time. I’ll get Rachel to hold the next board for photo shoot.
Cheers KS
thanks very much Chris !
I’m glad that at least one person , out of 3746 registered users [!] actually took the time and made the effort to post a photo of the foil of their board on a ‘foil’ thread .
My purpose and hope being …
…that , over a period of posts and time , it would present some sort of comparison between old and new style boards , also widepoints compared with thick points , and that we would clearly see things like forward foil , compared to a more back foil [if that makes sense …]
My guess is that the shapers and glassers who have been at it for years , like the barnfields, thailkills , st.pierres , fitzgeralds , etc , would have a very varied and interesting [to me only? I hope not !] photo resource of the evolution of boards over the last 40 or so years. And , of course , rocker too will be presented in this collection of photos , for us to see the change in that too.
… anyway , just my attempt to do a non-scientific , hopefully non-controversial / non-argumentative thread , which hopefully HEAPS of people would be able to contribute to … [photographically]
cheers !

all my pictures are too big
hey ben,
one of my favorite subjects as of late…
here’s what im currently riding.
cheers
THANKS guys !
Deathy , [as a last resort] , if you email me your shots , then once I have my photo editing software installed , I can have a play around with them , and hopefully be able to post them for you …
But first …try this …
do you have 'microsoft photo editor ’ or ‘photo studio 5’ , or similar programmes ? [because …there’s some stuff in the “using swaylocks” forum that may help you sort it out yorself , hopefully]
hope that helps mate !
cheers !

Took these just for you Chip,
This board has no taper- It’s modeled after one of Roy’s Parallel Profile Power Surfboards- Theoretically, it is 50/50 from nose to tail and is 2" all the way through.
Cheers,
Austin
Nose
Rail
the blue one is a single fin
the blank is one i just “hot wired” for a 6-4 thruster
Thanks Daz ! and everyone !
keep them coming guys !
I hope to get a shot of the Jim Banks 6’8" thruster I just picked up from the repairers too, when I get around to getting film for the camera.

You have seen this photo before:
For me, thin is in… edge control and allows me to ride the top 1/3 of the wave- for east-coast (USA) windswell this is key to generating speed.
and here’s my attempt at that photo (from january / february this year…)
…this is what NOT to do , in terms of foil , if you want a sensitive board that will ride well .
This board I made was an absolute piece of crap …just as well it didn’t cost me much to make .
Still … lesson learnt ! [the board has since been dispatched to surfboard heaven ]

I like the look of that foil. How thin is it? EPS? How much do you weigh and how is it catching waves?
If ya were talking to me:
The board is 5’8" x 19" x 2.25". Very domed deck. Very low rails. Very thin tail.
Poo-pee. Not EPS, but I really think that board would go well in EPS. I wish it was because she is starting to break down and the duplicate I had made (by the same shaper) is very close but lacks the magic (he even took that board back to CA and had it next to the replacement as he shaped it).
Get ready for this: I’m 6’0" and 180-190 lbs. I have even ridden that board in a 6/5/4 wetsuit in the thick of winter.
No, the board is not easy to paddle. But I am an ex-swimmer and ex-highly-ranked (regional) paddler (lifeguarding). Greg Loehr, in defense of poor-paddling “high performance” surfboards, once stated something like “who cares if it does not float well as long as it planes off and rides well?” I ascribe to that philosophy.
Muscle, efficient stroke technique, and positioning are key to getting into the wave. Ya have to WANT that wave. The twin fins help create some lift (a standard thruster setup just does not do it for me on that board). The thin rails force me to surf high and in the pocket, but I can manage bursts of speed to get out on the shoulder and hook back into the pocket… but the board does not do that work for me, that is for sure. Maneuverability is second to none.
For a long time that board was my go-to board in (once again, get this) knee-high to well OH. Mark Spindler here on Swaylocks can attest to this and can testify that the board works for me, despite others thinking it is far too small for me.
I’m not quite in the shape I once was and lack that explosive energy I once had… having a real job and a baby has cut into my water and cross-training time quite a bit. I’m trying to find a nice balance between a bit more volume and/or width for paddling and still thin-ness for sensitivity and performance. I’m having trouble finding a board that does the same… once Bert’s “Magic Carpet” surfburgers become available (wide but super thin), I might have to go for it- wide, super thin, and with engineered flex sounds tasty to me.
Here are a couple snappies so you know I’m not BS-in’:
Here is the duplicate (still good, just not the same magic):
Here is one for giggles :
True.
He was always on that board.
As the pictures show he is pulling his speed from well above the top third. Note the 5/4/3 with boots and gloves. Hood may be off, but the water is in the 30’s. This is something I don’t advocate, but to make those moves you have to turn your head and those suits don’t allow that. However, he doesn’t get his head wet very often, because he is surfing well within his range. So obviously that board is making it easy.
Rhino, have you ridden that board yet? What did you think. Here’s me holding one of Roy’s boards (graphite bottom) he sent me in Japan back in the 90s. Alas it was a bit too adventurous for the Japanese to take to.
Hey Slim
Just need to put on the fin…procrastination…It’s really itching about now. I dig the board, Is that a Heart Series? How dose it ride and how much dose it weigh? Mine tolls in at 15.5 pounds…hope it’s not TOO heavy. I’d hate for it to live on the wall.
Cheers,
Austin
The best board of all time and the basis of everything smaller and bigger that I own.
This my friends is the perfect rocker and foil (for me!)
