Surfboard for Dad

So after a good bit of re-research in the archives, I have come to the conclusion to scrap the Volan and use regular 6 oz. I am worried about the cutlap, and I don’t want any surprises on this project–better to leave the experimentation to a board for myself were the aesthetics are not as important.

Picking up the blank and some RR tommarrow, and after a few college exams next week, I’ll be getting underway.

As a side note, I am going to go with Kokua’s suggestion and tint the deck clear lam with a touch of green, hopefully creating a faux-Volan look. Now if anyone could tell me how much tint to use to create this affect, I’d appreciate it.

Hey sbfive, I got another idea for you. Order the blank with some serious stringer work. Like a balsa-hd foam Tband center plus two extra stringers, centered in the sides. The blank will come to you with roughly 4 equal panels of foam @ 6" each with the stringers in between.

You get lots of good from that:

Your fish tail tips will have wood in them so they’ll be a lot less likely to break off. If the stringers are centered, they’ll be just more than 12" apart - perfect spread for tail tips.

Your dad will love all the wood.

The board will be pretty stiff so he will find it efficient to paddle.

When you’re shaping, its easy to go flat from one side stringer across the middle to the other and only crown the outsides down to the rail. He’ll end up with a 12" wide flat spot down the middle for his chest instead of a big dome. And you’ll be able to take the foam down from the side stringers out so your rails don’t get too blocky.

With the extra stringers for paddling stiffness, you can go thinner than otherwise - like 2 3/4" instead of 3". Skin the blank to that - just touching the crust off the deck & then working the bottom - and then crown from stringers out with a block, not a planer. You’ll get really nice clean lines.

And your dad will think its killer.

Benny, you got me! I went to Clark today, since I was in the area. On the drive there, all I could think about was triple stringers…I had wanted to just get a blank and go, since waiting 2-3 weeks would push me close to my deadline and probably interfere with Finals week at school, but by the time I pulled into the lot I was convinced.

I went with a triple stringer, 3/8 in the center and 3/16 for the outers, because I figured if I am going for a lot of wood, I may as well go for a lot of wood, right? So I am stoked, never have worked with a triple stringer blank before, but I can’t wait now!

I’ll pick up the board around Nov. 16-17, depending on if clark pushes up the nect delivery date. I leave FL to head home for the holidays Dec. 9, so it should be plenty of time.

Thanks for the great Idea!!

I figure I will start working on some Keel Fins in the mean time…

Nice ! Your dad’s going to be stoked  I can’t wait to see photos, you better post 'em on here!

Hello All…I just wanted to update on the progress. There has been…well, not much. I have some material to draw my template up with, some RR, but not much else. Here is why…at Benny’s urging, I ordered a triple stringer blank from Clark. I am super stoked on it! Thanks again Benny. It was suppossed to be in by the 14th of November at the latest. Clearly, that did not happen. It is currently on a truck en route from Cali, and if all goes well, I should be making the drive over to Melbourne to pick it up on Wednesday, the 23rd. As soon as the blank makes its grand entrace, I will be getting underway. I also am waiting on my cloth to come in from my supplier. I will not name names, but FedEx (oops) managed to ship my materials to my parents house in Connecticut, a solid 1300 miles from its intended destination. FedEx apparently thinks this is a fun game. The last two shipments of cloth have all been re-routed to my parents house in CT, even though I clearly list my address properly. So I had it out with them today, and my package is being shipped to Florida 2nd day, so I should see that soon. I did have to convince Dad that HIS 6 oz aerialite was for someone elses board. He is not suspicious though, in the least, so the surprise is well intact. Once everything arrives, i will be in high gear, as I have already lost a good deal of time. Tommarrow I am heading off to the woodcraft store to either get a jig to sharpen my block planes, or just swallow it and get some new ones that come pre-sharpened. This of course in preparation for dealing with a triple dose of thick stringer…

In other news, I tried my hand at foiling up some wood keels. They are 9 inch base x 5 inch height, doubled foiled, no rake. They came out nice despite the admittedly cheap ply I used. I was pretty proud of them. In a late night stroke of…well, I am not sure if i would call it genious…i bought a wood burning kit from Jo-Ann Fabrics, and burned the logo I put on my boards on one of the keels. I think it added a nice touch…unique at least. The best part is that I returned the kit to Jo-Ann for a full refund, because I am out of money and feared I would starve to death if I didn’t. The Visa is taking a hit on this project for sure…

However…while looking at the keels for the last few days…I am not happy with them. While I was proud of my efforts, this keels are begging to be put on a different board. The reason being is that the ghost of WoodMaven’s Keel fins came to me in a dream, and explained that they wanted to be a part of Dad’s board. So…I sent Rolly a frantic PM, begging for his help. I just feel that sometimes, you just have to find the best man for the job, and he is it in this case. I feel that his keels could add a level of craftsmanship that mine didn’t fully possess. I learned from Dad that working with wood takes alot of experience and devotion, because of the soul that wood has…Rolly has that experience and his work shows it. I am hoping that he will consider my request, especially due to the very tight time schedule. We will see…if anyone speaks to him, send him my way!

Well, that is my update, feel free to share. I will probably keep topping this post as I go thru the process, because I am hoping to document this for Dad’s later enjoyment…haha. He will for sure get a kick out of this. And hopefully I can post some photos of my work, despite that fact that after some of the balsa boards you guys have posted, I am gonna look rediculous in comparison. Thanks all…

Great project. I’ve slowly been getting my Dad interested in surfing with us (he’s in his sixties, but is comfortable in the ocean and quite fit) and while I’ll be more than stoked to have him out in the on a boogie-board, the chance to build him a board would be great.

Just one thought on the ‘one-drop tint’ volan look: having done this a couple of times, it may be useful to do a test patch or two. Mix the resin, let it set a while after careful stirring, strain it, and then brush out a bit on a glass patch on a foam scrap. What looks adequate in the bucket can appear non-existant in the lamination. If you somehow missed some micro-globs of tint, they’ll pop up quickly enough and you can re-strain. If needed, you can adjust the color. It may sound like a hassle to some, but it seems like the object is to make this a special board, so take the extra 15 minutes. Also, the translucent liquid tints available at Surfsource are nice for this type of job, mixing a bit easier than the paste-type products without the risk of ‘speckling’.

Best of luck.

Jeffrey, thanks for the advice on the tints. That is some solid advice, and I will defenitely take the extra 15 minutes to ensure that this comes out right. Also, I do have the tints from surfsource, so that is what I will be using, so that worked out perfect. Thanks for the tips!

UPDATE NOV. 23rd

Hello all…just a quick update. I spoke with Clark today, and my blank is MIA. It did not come in as planned, but the actual truck never showed either. It is about 9 days late so far, and by the time I get it, it will be probably about 15 days late… Unfortunately, the guys at Clark were unable to tell me if my blank was even on the truck. I will speak with them again on Monday, and hope that my blank shows. If not…well, we’ll cross that bridge when someone drags me kicking and screaming over it…

In other news, I spoke with Rolly, and he very generously offered to drop everything, even as we approach the holidays, and set me up with a set of sunburst keels, like Chips set…Unfortunately, I am going to have to decline, even after I begged and pleaded for his help. I know, I am a schmuck…the reason is that due to some family issues, I am going to have to depart for home earlier than expected, and I can’t ask Rolly to move that fast. I am probably going to be in round the clock mode as it is to finish.

I have Finals week at UCF, dad’s board to shape, and because I am an awesome guy, I also am shaping and glassing a round nose modern fish for my 18 year old sister, who will be visiting me in FL in January. Needless to say, the cloth for her board is also lost in the mail with the rest of my materials. Greg L better hurry up with that UV epoxy he mentioned…haha. Because clearly guys, every second counts. If you guys want to start a pool about whether or not I finish it all on time, I’ve got $20 on me either finishing, or going down swinging, because I have too much invested to give up now. Thanks again all!

UPDATE NOV. 28

HAHAHAHAHAA. Clark foam officially informed me today that my custom ordered blank, that I have been waiting the last month for, got “deleted out of the system.” What that means is that i won’t see it anytime soon. I have 3 options, let me know what you think.

A) Re-Order my triple stringer 68P, wait for it to be delivered and shape and glass it after the holidays. I would have to give it to Dad sometime in Feb., when he will be down in FL with my Mom for a few days…

B) Pick up a 74R triple stringer that Clark happens to have in stock. Can I get an agreeable rocker line for a huge fish with a 7’4 R?? It is probably not the best option…but…

C) Just Get a Regular 68P single stringer…and go with that.

Let me know…

3 questions which should help you decide… questions about your questions…

A) Is your dad very knowledgeable about stringers and surfboard flex?

B) How necessary is a triple stringer (are you going for a certain flex or is it just aesthetics)?

C) Can you deal with settling?

p.s. my suggestion is wait for the triple stringer. but in the meantime, get the 74R and make him the board for christmas as a 7’4", dont change it. save the 6’8" for his birthday or something. It will give you more time and you can put more care and attention into the 6’8". but thats just my opinion.

so what’s gunna happen with dad’s surfboard regarding the current blank situation?

In other news, I spoke with Rolly, and he very generously offered to drop everything, even as we approach the holidays, and set me up with a set of sunburst keels

Rolly is a good man .

do NOT knock back generousity …it rarely returns .
