surfboard in a day!

after exhausting myself making my girlfriends board i decided i deserved something for myself…

oh bugger with the excuses im hooked guys so i decided to shape and glass a styrofoam board in a day, just to see you know… well it is possible.

i shaped the board layed the glass on it with RR fast, both sides, then chucked it in the vac bag for 3 hours. my first pop out! woohoo!

im starting my personal war against you know who! lol just kidding.

i then glassed on some odd fins i had from repairing mates boards and then hotcoated the bottom. ready to surf and all in a day!

i reckon next time ill try some form of peel ply and breather fabric and maybe even a composite kinda thing.

dims are 5’7" x 18.5" x 2.25"

tried it on sat in gutless chop and got a few but this thing is so light i think i need some glassy barrels!

btw its glassed single 6oz bottom double 6oz top and its still so light!

wow nice looking board

so let me get this right you made a epoxy board in 1 day… NICE thats really impressive, i’m working on just getting one done in under a month

the thing was skiny, after spending 6 weeks or so building a hollow i really needed to mow some foam and it just so happened to be the day my line manager said we could have a ‘play day’ at work… students being on hols as its easter!

so i threw caution to the wind and just did it. epoxy glassing the hollow with RR really taught me some stuff so just put that into practice.

i now have a board i can play with as i dont have too much feeling for it. so im thinking of beefing up the rails to start with, then maybe slice the fins off and fit a load of fcs plugs… and i mean a load ala chipfish! so if your listening chipfish i wouldnt mind a few pointers. ill post a rail shot in a mo.

then ill maybe paint it up and hand it around anyone who fancies riding it.

Great job!

Maybe you and Resinhead should get together.

cheers stingray.

resinheads talents are way ahead of mine but im setting my sights high!

i just need some mentoring on the shaping side of things if any of the uk shapers are listening! pretty much got the tech wired tho now.

ok here is a pic of the tail. rear fins are 5" from tail front fins are 11" from tail both at 1" from rail and 7degrees of cant, front toed in to the nose, rears 2" ahead of nose. width at 1 foot from tail is 14"

im thinking of eventually slicing these fins off and fitting loads of fcs plugs to play around… anyone got any thoughts???

okay folks, i think i might be able to sell this one to a mate for his 13 yr old son!

he rang last night and is after something for june for when he takes him away to newquay.

this will then give me some cash to buy some more resin and glass and some more probox from our uk supplier…cheers to larry and robin, tims a top guy, we spoke a few yrs ago and he got back to me straight off!

so my question is do i leave the glass on fins on the board in their current position or do i slice them off and slap something mainstream in like fcs and if so what position/options should i give this little grom? id do probox guys but i dont think his dad can stretch to that.

im going to sand it off, spray some colour on it then give it a topcoat, sanded finish im thinking.
