Surfboard Reshaping

I have a 6’2 short board that I never ride. I think it would be fun to change it to a smaller different board that would be more of use to me. How would I do this if I can? Would it be more worth it to just sell the board and start from scratch? Any input at all is appreciated. Thanks.

Sell the board for cheap on Craiglsist and use the money to but a new blank for $60.  Easier to do and more likely to result in exactly what you wanted in the first place.

I don’t know much about shaping boards but what is the material I use to glass it or would I take it somewhere to get it classes. Can I use fins from another one of my boards?

You can either glass it yourself with fiberglass, epoxy or poly resin. You might want to check out some videos online in regards to shaping and glassing. If you are going to do glass on fins then you can kick some old fins off of a board, sand them down and re-glass them but you can’t re-use fin plugs/boxes. Here’s a shaping video we did with the legendary Hawaiian shaper Ben Aipa;

Hey Surfswimmer-

Peeling the glass off and re shaping is tough especially if you’re board is only a 6-2.  There probably isn’t much foam there to start with.  Might be best to sell it and parleigh those funds into some board building supplies.  Not sure where you are located but we have classes and walk people through the entire process.

Hope that helps.

Brad

I’ve reshaped 4 longboards and turned them into short, fat twin fins with good results.  The 6’ 2" won’t give you much foam unless you’re shaping a board for a rhesus monkey.  It was fun to do since friends were willing to donate their old boards for experimentation, but stripping fiberglass and all is a pain in the neck.  I’ll probably never do it again.
