Looks similar to the board Rob Machado rode at the Reef Pro but with the intent of being able to surf it or ride powder. Interestingly enough, these guys chose Rob to give it a go at Cardiff.
Hah - that was funny! There was a guy in Ireland IIRC that was mentioned in the "Borrowed Boards" series in Surfer Mag, that was building surfboards based on the snowboard template - weird looking things, kinda like those Meyerhoffers in some ways, but completely original approach, and the writeup said they actually surf really well. Interesting to see the board sports borrowing from each other. I bet that board wouldn't last long if it was skied on any kind of regular basis.

Yeah, once they put a fin on it, I kind of figured they could have taken just about any surfboard down the mountain. And you're right, it looks like it wouldn't last very long as a snowboard.
I don't think the snowboard shape routed into the bottom added anything performance-wise to the board, other than a symbolic imagery maybe. Those guys acted like they reinvented the wheel LOL but I say Hey if they're having fun, more power to 'em! They reminded me of myself and my high school buddies. Life's always more fun when everyone's stoked.
