surfboards by Glen Horn

Anyone know or ride surfboards by Glen Horn?  Just curious - ran into an old surfing buddy of mine I hadn't seen in years, and he's riding Glen Horn boards and couldn't stop raving about them.  He's a core surfer who used to build his own boards, so I figure Glen must be a heckuva shaper.  Love to see some pics of his work.

If all works, a photo of my Glen Horn shape is attached. ...Glen nailed it, my board works perfect for me. You can't get a board like that off the rack.

Nice looking board, have any more pics, showing the rocker, and the fins?

If all works, a photo of my Glen Horn shape is attached. My friends ride his boards, and I know him from Baja. I was finally able to get him to shape me a board. I consider the board magic. Not many are. I didn’t have to get involved with the design, i just asked him to shape a board that fits my style. Also attached is a photo of the kind of waves down south, the board was shaped for. Glen nailed it, my board works perfect for me. You can’t get a board like that off the rack.

As far as Glens character, I think Boots articulated it perfectly. If you act with respect in the water and on land, you’ll be treated with respect. As it should be. If you have a problem with him, chances are, you got out of line. Own up to it, and don’t be a seppo.

Support your local shaper,

Sam

I always thought the nickname came from the fact that he has been a mainstay there for a long, long time. In any case, it is a term of respect and a fitting moniker for a very cool guy.

I have never rode one of Glen’s boards…but I see a fair amount of them in Baja…where Glen spends most of his time. People that have em…like em. Glen spends a minimal amt. of time in San Diego County every year catching up on orders. Sometime in the past, he had his own surf shop.

PM me for e-mail address

At First I was thinking this was the Son of legandary Surfer Kit Horn. But on further investigation seems this is a diffrent Glen Horn.

That would be him - I do recall my friend saying something about Baja and Scorpion Bay, I think that's where he met him, or they had done a Baja trip together.

My friend was riding a 6'4" thruster with swallowtail, and a bit more volume than standard, nice looking board, but I didn't get a chance to really examine it like I wanted, he was in a hurry, and we had to catch up a bit since I hadn't seen him in years.  His wife rides an 8' speed egg which he raved about, but which I did not get to see.

He said Glen had been experimenting with quads, but was finding them tricky to get dialed in.

here is my 7’6 gun

great board for big days at the cliffs or blacks

I did not know Glen well. We would say hello to each other how's the surf, that sort of thing. His Father bought a board from me a 6'8" swallowtail Sunset shaped by Syd Madden.  Under Kit's feet that board came alive.

 SDrepairman, Nice looking gun.

I spoke to Glen today at Bird's Surf Shed.    He is not Kit Horn's son.     A common mistake, in his words.

Thanks for straightening that out Bill

I've known Glen from surfing Baja for years. I first met him at the Wall in 92, and he shapes boards for my buddy. My buddy loves these boards, and he usually gets a 7'10 funboard and a 6'10 shortboard. He is known there (the wall) as "The Mayor," and he makes a lot of boards for Baja style point surf-bigger and thicker. One day I saw him surf from 5:30am til almost 1:30pm (3 seperate sessions for me!), and he has one of the smoothest styles I've ever seen. There was a surfer's journal article on him about a year ago. He makes great boards.

That would be the self-proclaimed “Mayor”  I recall him going around to people at the Wall asking them to kick in money to buy the land.  The locals used to ask who the guy was with the Pan Bimbo Truck.  He had quite a rig set up for Baja.  I think he did summers in Scorpion and winter at the Wall.

There is a good piece on him in the movie “Stoked and broke”, he surfs with a very eye pleasing graceful style, and his funky old camp truck look cool to me.

Here is pic of Big Red…or Toro Rojo…as it is referred to in the Journal article. This photo taken by a friend who was capturing Tony who is waving…and just happened to get Glen(in chair) and his truck. This was at Malibu in the early to mid 90’s where I would see Glen from time to time. I first surfed with him in Mex. in late 80’s and for the last 7 years or so look forward to seeing him and Roberta in Southern Baja in the spring.

Yep-that's Big Red. He used (still?) to put up a tarp and lift weights next to that thing in the harsh desert air. I remember once when he and I were sitting alone in the lineup talking on a perfect wall day. A couple of wavehogs from central ca paddled out, and one of them gets a good one and paddles right past us out the back. Glen says "You paddle behind me you surf behind me." Next wave, he found out what he meant. Another time we were talking and drinking Tecates in that brutal Central Baja offshore wind while a group was bailing  because of the wind, and Glen says to me "Wind come, Green Go." I've got so many more stories about him. The guy is a Baja icon, and he is one of the coolest guys I've ever met. Great surfer, great shaper and so very down to earth.

Glen will be one of those guys that you see in some future magazine add…80 years old with a ripped body of a 40 year old. I think he stills does the weight training after the 8 hour surf sessions. Yea, I like the way he works  to keep the lineup sorted. We tag team em’ when necessary.

Have known Glen for years, a true soul surfer.  Huck, PM sent if you want more info.

Picture of a  day spent fishing, did get some driftwood for our efforts.

Thanks, I did see the pm but didn't want to give the impression I was shopping for Glen Horn surfboards, just wanted to see some pics, and stories, because I knew my friend wouldn't rave like that for no reason.

Wonder it driftwood furniture will ever come back in style?
