No pro here. I did for the first 7 boards or so. Got Cocky and stopped doing it. Wish I had stuck with it. It would have prevented me from repeating some mistakes and made it easier to repeat some of the things I liked. I think I’ll start again. Mike
Yeah, I log my dimensions on every board (over 6,000 now) that I handshape. I take over 40 pieces of info. I also take notes from riders and try to translate and correspond the subjective “feel” things with tangible objective data. Most of my records are on paper in a log book.
I did use a “Palm-like device” for a couple of years but sure enough I lost about 500 boards-worth of info. I kept a syncro with my laptop but the laptop also ate it later on. Now those boards are on a CD. I guess it’s my engineering background that makes me this way. I’d have no problem with going into a situation and shaping without making a record. I did this in Oz on my stints.
One last thing, I have shaped a board completely without any dimensions, measurements or templates. I just wanted to see how my eye was and I was stoked with the result; doing that will boost your confidence (or make you cry). I’ve found the records a great tool for refining designs…
