Surfer Killed By Shark In Maui

Did anyone else read the article on the Surfer killed in Maui yesterday?

I’m not saying that anyone should live in fear of the Ocean, but it is just another way in which she can humble us and put things in perspective. My thoughts go out to the family!

I do however think that as enviormental laws regarding commercial fishing are eased by the current administration we will see an increase in shark attacks. It only goes to reason that as the food supply in deeper waters decreases sharks are forced closer inland to feed off smaller "feeder’ fish and in turn will come into contact with humans much more frequently.

Everything we do has an effect on everything else! Respect the Ocean and everything that lives, swims, surfs, and exists within it.

This event only further proves my theory (which was derived after watching the “News Discussion” shows on TV like HardBall, etc. and taking a cue from recent government Legislation) that all “wild” animals should be exterminated, as they cause too much of a threat to the human population. With all the troublesome “wild” animals out of the way, we can keep only the useful domesticated animals alive and safe from disease and predators until we need to kill and eat them. We should also clear cut all the forests, jungles and “undeveloped land”, as it has been proven that these areas incubate diseases like the Monkey Flu (as per the evening news). We can then “unlock” all the valuable natural resources which are now lying useless in places like the National Parks (this taken from the current administration’s policy). Think of how the economy will improve when business is free from the constraints of needlessly powerful governmental agencies like the EPA! It’s a well known fact that big business has all our best interests at heart, and left to their own devices will do “the right thing”.

As this all will obviously take some time, we need a short term solution to the shark problem, so for right now we should make sure that everyone on Maui go out and kill as many sharks as they can find. After all, one of them has to be the culprit, right?

On second thought, this is probably already being done as we speak…

Maybe you could get those sharks to attack all those people who claim that sarcasm is the lowest form of humor?

UInfortunately, that is not possible as the sharks in question are “wild”. It only further illustrates my point as to why they should all be killed. However, if we could either geneticlly engineer a shark to be trainable, or perhaps find a way to implant a computer chip into their brain so that they could be controlled, perhaps they could be made “useful”, and thus be worthy of being spared…

Just another surfer ignoring the warning signs. Local officials already told everyone that surfing alone, 300 yards offshore, in VERY murky waters, and at dawn, is just asking for trouble. Some people have to learn the hard way.

And poor Beth Hamilton that got her arm chewd off in Kaui. It was her fault too. There’d been warnings for several days of a wayward Tiger Shark. She went out early, ignored the warnings, and did the most stupid thing possible - she thrashed her arms about pretening to be a sea turtle, laughing! She was also hundreds and hundreds of yards oiffshore. She was also surfing in the middle of the Tiger Shark breeding season, in a known breeding area. Smart. Didn’t she know that warnings are there for a reason?

Why do so many surfers ignore shark or water pollution warnings?

My sympathy goes out to his family but according to the score card it is like a million to us and a few hundred (okay maybe a thousand) for them! I still go back to the safety quote about more people each year get killed by being hit in the head by coconuts then by shark attack! This is why I am trying to ban all coconut related products!

My condolenses to the family.

I’ll still take my chances in the ocean. Beats the traffic and a car wreck any day.

One very important thing which I did not say:

In all seriousness, my sympathy goes out to the surfer and their family. This is a tragic loss.

FYI, the shark is not being hunted. no one on maui bames the shark, nor do they blame Will. shit happens.

TSaunders, you are right, the “wild” coconut poses a grave health hazard and should as such be exterminated in favor of the domesticated coconut. I wonder if science will ever be able to breed out the wild species aggressive behavior and harness it for the benefit of mankind.

Man I used to surf S turns everyday as I used to work at Noeilani condos right there , never saw any sharks ,but it used to cross my mind .Thoughts and prayers to Wills family.

A good friend of mine once told me(while we were surfing Cave Rock in SA) “don’t worry, they always bite the other guy” at that point in time there were only the two of us out, he laughed and dropped into a wave leaving me sitting there , thinking--------in other words Welcome to the food chain>

That’s why I only surf Waikiki. The last shark attack there was in the 50’s and even then it was a fisherman chumming. It’s safe as safe can be.
