Does anyone have an idea of what the dimensions would be on those boards the Malloys are riding in that article a couple issues back. I know that they are 12’6’ but thats really all they give and there are no real good outline shots to go by.
those boards were shaped by Joe Bark in PV. Ross Garrett (editor/Surfer) actually drove all three of the shapes down to our factory in San Diego. We glassed the boards using Mark Tolan’s water-based DHP. There were no dimensions written on the shapes. They were very thick, I’d say over 6" and each had different widths probably ranging from 23 to 24. I wished we measured them now that you mention it as they were beautiful. They resemble paddleboards but had a lot more tail kick and a rolled vee. We installed an 10" F/U box in the middle and Future boxes on the outboards. Obviously, they were meant to be surfed with this set-up. One interesting note, when we were throwing the batches, they asked for three shades of yellow. Somehow I dabbed way too much red in one of the yellow batches. The DHP was so expensive (I mis-pigmented over a gallon and a half) that I had to lam with it. As it turned out it gave a good offset to the trio. You might be able to get basic dimensions from Joe Bark or possibly from Ross Garrett at Surfer. I’m sure they have contact emails out there somewhere…
Here’s my version… http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/Detailed/342.html
PlusOneShaper- What is waterbased DHP? I have never heard of it. Thanks -Carl
Oh I found their webpage thanks -Carl
the 12’8’’ clark blank is base 5 1/2’’ thick the tandem blank with reduced rocker is the call J.wants one Ive been thimkin for about three years now the blank is on the rack as of last night I left the template out in the atmosphere to flatten …will post progress …looks like a 4-pack…ambrose…standing at the edge of the abyssimal commitment…theory to reality
the 12’8" is the next dimension an 24 1/2 is pretty straight not much turning hip and a paddle still dont turn’em hot curl bottom is the way to go praise that kelly kid’s axe ambrose …
give me a day or two and i’ll measure those very boards and post numbers…
Better yet lets take one on our trip, ride it then measure it.Ill leave the boho fish so they wont miss it .KP.
you aint man enough to handle that much board BRO!!!
he is too! quit pikin on yer lil brother an let 'im try the new bismark dammit otherwise he’ll never get a taste…just dont lose it on the rocks… somebody… will get mad…cut the tandem rockered 12’8 and roughed it with the millwakee on#3 speed two hours with 40 grit blue paper whadda whapper…will esposa primera pile on ? we can only hope at least I 'll be ready when henry VIII comes to surf…or maybe Theodore Roseveldt or maybe John Muir …talk about foiling … how does one plot this foil… by hand…by the way I did it with my trusty 60 watt work light out in the yard … lower the bar…Oh… John Kelly had an ax…EE yi EEE YI yo… ambrose… at the full moon… one goin three ta go
aw shucks Ambrose ,you know KP and I like to rib each other now and again-it’s what keeps us honest ( and laughing!!)I’ll now go out and howl with the full moon…
KP, Remember “The Giant Bohemoth”? We rode that thing at Malibu, sometimes three of us. People would see that thing coming down the line and it scared the hell out of them. Kelly Fields rode it by himself and ripped on it, 15 second long hang tens, 9 step backpedal a drop knee cut back, turn it arround and do it all over again. I rode it with Pogo. I’m laughing. Greg Liddle made it, who has it now. It would be cool to find it. TB
tonite with the rising of the moon I roughed #2 with fresh 40 grit disc… cut off 6’’ of nose now down to 12’2" Kaaumualii 2000 template + 3/4" width in nose - 1/4" in the tail (this template is a natural double ender) and this reduced radical rocker of the tandem configuration… saved the railcuts still attatched to the nose piece looks like a great start for a spoon thing frankenstein board… jimmy’s blank with reduced rocker, tanker R, looks right I kinda hope maybe he doesnt want it and I’ll make another for the fleet … dogs on the deck you could mount a lil ol displacent ripper as a paddle seat although that would start to get high and tend to be more tippy the higher the pads are… like to compare solutions with the barks after I’m through with these… kinda fraid to see em when Im in process for fear of gettin thrown off the invisible muse…#2 is about 1 1/2 ‘’ narrower than #1 and looks more surfy…still too much rocker to be nose ridey …ambrose… talkin into the air in case someone cares to hear
Ola Ambrose!!! TB. been lookin for that thing for years that was so fun,POGO the Space dog ,I miss him.Tim how about thoses 12fts Merv Larson shaped for us they were way cool . We took that same trip but not as far as the Malloys. We sat on ours like a surfskis, but the seat was velcroed on so you could surfit. Very close to Barks boards.
KP, The Larson boards, I forgot…You owe me a dive mask! Nevermind it is probably still washing arround in the tide west of the tressel. I sold mine to Rick S. I made six paddle/rescue boards for State Life Gaurds for the State Parks out of the same blanks and ML sanded them. Funny how well we all worked together in the SB surf industry at that time. I believe that is one of the reasons so much inovation both in equipment and in the mental approach to wave riding took place in that era. It was a special time…
put the Planer on the two of em last night amd straightened em out and blended the curve of rail down to ready to turn, leaving roll in the bottom seems appropriate and consistant with the original Kaaumualii giving the displacement feature of the bottom an oppertunity to engage…this is of course in conjunction with the chine splash rail about the nose tapering back to disappear at 1/3 up from the tail where the concaves apex at max depth and where the V starts to fade out and up to the raised tail…I was thinking about the Illustrious Professor Merv Larsen in the midst of shape trance and wondered how His shapes have evolved?..His stuff always impressed me in that he didnt FIN em and relied on edge and paddle for direction (pure scientific tecnique…kudos master merv) the one I had in my yard for a few years was very down railed and flat bottomed Kirk were your coastal assult vehicles finnless or finboxed ? ( making the surfing aspect worlds appart in difficulty factor especially standing up) …were they of that flat bottom edgie down railer period as well? … pulled the caliper off the brace and taped the gap its down to 5’’ thick on the two and the rails are coming into focus there is so much foam I would say any more of these experiments would warent a mold modification to avoid exposing core foam as well as keeping dust off the floor I mean snowdrifts on the walkway …the more I think about it the rail shoulders will be reinforced to help survive the paddle impact…hope this play by play interests some one … It’s a great cathartic excercise for me to help focus on the job… ambrose… took the last antibiotic today I might be well? … is that good? or re pharmeceuticles a cultural component of the contemprary creative process? sorry john I didnt mean to sound harsh on the dora defense…media wise I seemed to think Dora believed he got played more than he was playing them an that was the most upsetting of all…
They had small keels Merv did for the lifeguard boards he did for county. Mervs still in Ventura and had some health problems of late , but I think he’s doin OK .
Whatever happened to the original post i couldnt see one
