surfer mag surprise

I finally found the article after a number of page throughs. Why don't the bastards put the goddamn page #'s on the goddamn pages. It is one of numerous reasons that I long ago cancelled my subscription.

Mike, how do you know that is page 92?

Roger

Just saw your response, Roger. Funny. I found the article thumbing through it looking at the pictures. The page number was listed in the table of contents which is pretty damn hard to find because of all the advertisements. Of course, there is no page 92 in the freakin mag. I got my subscription after about a 20 year lay off. I got it through a MADD fundraiser mag drive. I’m a sucker for that shit. I was lucky to even notice it that’s why I posted this in the first place. Figured there were more people like me that just check out the photos then pass em on to the kids. Hope you and yours are doing well(the"boys"too).Mike

can anybody talk about these fins? They show up in the article as well on D.T.'s boards.

those fins… yeah man, those fins!

my guess is the tips flex a bit like those squirrel tail longboard fins, providing more drive through turns, while also giving a bit more holding power as well.

would love to try them out…

anyone mfg. anything similar? I’ve looked but no luck. Guess I gotta start makin’ fins too!

the thick part near the base is to hold water; give a twin keel feel,

the thin part by the notch (if you can call it that), allows movement, and flexibility to sway (locks.com) back and forth

and the tips extending out hold the fin in the water, give a little stability.

and some drive.

You surf the way you surf, regardless if it’s on a fish, a tri, a semi gun, a gun , a log, whatever…

If you vert, you vert a fish.

If you trim and run, that’s your style on a fish.

So very true…it all works.

Yes and no, brother.

Most people who have an aggressive style have it because they like the way it feels. Same goes for most people who have a more laid back style… it just feels good that way. So, no matter what the average Joe is riding, they’re style really won’t change too much.

But if you ever watch somebody who really knows their boards… really has them wired… they take advantage of what each specific design has to offer the ride, and their style reflects that. Machado comes to mind, and we can all relate to that, I think.

Some of what you’re saying has to do with body mechanics, and some has to do with the fact that most guys just don’t have the where-with-all to know the difference between how different boards are supposed to be ridden. You can go vert on a longboard, or a fish, or a single fin, or a thruster. But how you connect your turns is the big difference…I think.

Sure, you gotta compensate somewhere when you switch your twin fin 5’8"er to a 9’ log, but you still surf the same style, which onlookers have trouble perceiving exactly what board you are riding.

Maybe the 9’ log is outta the spectrum.

Lets switch from a 5’6" fish to a 7’9" twin fin FUNBOARD! Most onlookers can’t tell the difference when I’m riding either of them. Throw in a 6’4" tri fin, a 7’ bonzer, or a 6’ quad, and the surfing is still the same. Quickest with the 6’4"ers, slowest with the funboard…ya dink? But anyone would have trouble figuring out exactly which board is being ridden.

I’ve been doing it for years, and most who know my style know it’s me, but could never figure out exactly what size and kind of board I’m riding.

Oh, I’ve owned 5’6" twin fins up to 10’3" Brewer guns, and most everything in between.

You’re so right! Some people go through life trying to impose themselves on everything around them. Others seek to function within the context of a specific instrument.

okay …

I just received this issue of “Surfer” in the mail today … thanks heaps , ‘Rooster’ Mike !!

Yep , it was a fairly interesting article …

now I know he is the son of Mark Thomson [flextail man from lennox head], and George Greenough is in his neighbourhood , the experimentation and lineage all makes sense .

And, being that he was 22 , and a thruster shaper / rider when he first hopped on a fish (with no preconceived ideas about how to ride it ) …this to me helps explain the ‘modern manouevres’ , and vertical aspect of his fish surfing . [On what , evidently , are still short , wide , flat twin keel fishes , did I get that right ??]

…good stuff ! Nice to see someone ELSE besides Dave Rastovich ripping on a fish …

this quote was interesting too , I thought …

" I wouldn’t be riding these things if I didn’t really believe they can be surfed as good or better than a top-grade Thruster in most conditions" .

HE evidently can , but I guess , as he pointed out , a lot of people who use fishes coming off mals will tend to surf them more like a mal than a thruster . [Plus , the fact that he has down the line , fast , hollow pointbreaks as his testing grounds can’t hurt , either !]

I look forward to seeing “Hydrodynamica” , the fish movie , here in Australia one day , hopefully !
