Bob-

Digging your whole site. I was 18 y.o. and in Baja for a couple of weeks in August 64 living in a VW van, surfing all day, and spending the evenings getting wrecked in Hussongs.

The pics remind me how differently and how well longboards were surfed back then. Every now and then I see someone surfing with that style and it looks so much better than most of what passes for longboard riding today. If I am sounding like an old man… it’s OK, I am one.

TomCruz,

Stoked you liked the blog… Baja in '64 must have been classic. The pics and stories on our blog come from my father, Jim, who is an old timer like you.

I agree with you, longboarding today is way different. I too enjoy watching longboarders with style. I was raised to believe that walking the board was an art form. And every move you make on the wave is desgined to keep you in the curl. You ride what the wave offers rather than shred the wave into submission.

Don’t get me to wrong. When I was younger too, I loved to to short board. But longborading has always been my base.

Howzit bob, I made my first trip to San Miguel in 64’ at the ripe age of 15, But the best was cinco de mayo 65’ woke up to perfect 8 ft+ waves and only 5 cars in the camp area. Those were the days with 3 m’s and Stacks just down the road. Aloha, Kokua

Hi bob,

I have good memories of San Miguel, too. My dad took me there to surf for my 14th birthday, 1972. First time I felt like I could really surf. There were two gringos ripping it on fishes. They spoke fluent Spanish. I wonder who they were? He took me fishing the next day. There was huge surf on a couple of islands off Ensenada. Got some bad memories of the place, too. TEQUILLA! mike

kokua & rooster,

Great stories… My best trip to San Miguel was when me and my three best buddies decided to go to San Miguel the next morning to meet a swell. We lived in San Clemente and woke up the next morning at 3:30 and drove to Mexico. Four of us in the cab of a Ford F 150… No body could move or fart. We arrived to glassly 6 ft surf. Great day, no crowds. I forgot my booties and cut my foot on every rock at low tide. That trip we stopped for the best fish tacos I have ever had…
