La Libertad. Great right point break. Also Sunsal, a few K’s north more mellow right point. Spent a month there in 1975 - pre death squads.
Hey Red Thorn - La Libertad is the main point of coastal civilization and has both a nice point and some fun beach sections. Roughly six to eight km north of town is a little cove with a smokin’ point break called El Xonte (pronounced zone - tay) not easy to find as the only landmark is a small tienda with 3 or 4 fixture local soaks meandering around in front of it with a smattering of local livestock, mainly pigs. Behind the tienda is a small muddy path/road that ends at the entrance to the bay flanked by a couple of small sodas and some cabinas. The buses from town will call out the stop or any local will be able to guide you to it. Further north of there is," Kilometro 56 ", which is literally the point break in front of the kilometer 56 road indicator. These are my three favorite spots there, but from the Guatemalan border south(and though not publicized, also north) you will be able to find fun surfable and with great frequency, empty breaks and very chill locals both in and out of the water. Have a blast amigo…Glenn
