surfin with the dolphins

swifty - you’ve obviously not surfed ceredigion in winter time - yes there are dolphins in uk.

on another point - I heared a theory once that dolphins communicate by beaming images to one another via sonar - sounds interesting - any evidence?

Some Lucky Bugger In indo! (www.baliwaves.com)

Josh.

Complete with full wetsuit AND booties, …er…INDO what?

Hey josh,

Im from newcastle, just comming out of steamers now! Woo. Crappy surf though! :frowning:

Anyway, ive been surfin when a guy hauled in 2 bronze whalers about 1 - 1 1/2 mts long. That was scary.

Off the rocks? Thats pretty damn close to get to the whales from land. The good thing about where we asaw this whale was it was pretty isolated, so noone really knew it was there. But 2 days later, the tv choppers were straight over it, and there about 100 people watching the mother and her calf from the hill. They left that night…

Well I took it off readers indo pics on baliwaves.com but that pic looks semi fake? Or maybe its just shallow with a sharp reef Below? Strange?http://www.baliwaves.com/readers/readers.htm

Hey Nicko,

Were still wearing steamers in sydney.Josh.

Rahhhhh!

is that an Indo dolphin???

yea , were lucky here with dolphins as well…

sometimes you see groups of 4 or 5 …other times ive seen pods of 40 or 50 …they just invade a break and go crazy …

ive had so many kool encounters i wouldnt have time to tell them all …

i reckon there getting better at surfing , ive noticed the level of performance has really increased over the years…

id swear some dolphins escaped from sea world , and started teaching new tricks to the wild dolphins…

hey josh …

i got an uncle not far from you …

hes in deewhy now , but he was in manly for a number of years about 7 or 8 years back …

his name is booma,

old guy who sits way out and picks off the big ones …

surfs queenscliffe bombie and and some other out there waves ,german banks off dee why as well …

you met him???

regards

BERT

We here in Galicia, have tons of a kind of dolphin called “Arroaz”. They are bigger than dolphins, about 4 or 5 meter long and 300 kg. They act as Bert said:

"sometimes you see groups of 4 or 5 …other times ive seen pods of 40 or 50 …they just invade a break and go crazy …

ive had so many kool encounters i wouldnt have time to tell them all …"

They also are the best surfers but while on Australia they are improving and learning new tricks, here in Galicia they are in some kind of “retro movement” and they only surf the wave drawing clean lines doing less aerials every day. Of course they all use dark grey wetsuits, as you should to be a truly “retro surfer”.

I can’t lie, most of the times when they invade the break, i feel really scared…

Here i show you some photos where you can see that some of them are using cut away fins, but the wide base fins are the most extended.

Good waves!

been out at cocoa with manatees in the surf… when they started rolling their flat wide backs out of the water some of the people next to me freaked out (sea monster?)paddled in and left. harmless, but i’d hate to hit one, kinda like a giant, slow snail.

This may sounds stupid, but what if you modeled a surfboard fin after a dolphin fin?

yeah i have been in the water in cocoa with dolphins once but manatees a bunch of times. when those things surface it looks like there a rock floating to the surface. this one bugged my friend for about half an hour, it just keep bumbing and surfacing like right underneath him. This summer up in oc. md i was out and a school of fast movin bait fish came up, on my way of trying to get out of this 50 by 20 yard school of fish about 20 dolphins or so surfaced and where feddin on them. it was a really cool experience but it really scared the crap out of me.

Howzit josh, great picture, so I just made it my desktop background. Aloha, Kokua

Yeh I’m in Sydney and I’m still in a steamer though it’s getting warm in the middle of the day. The best dolphin spot is the south coast from about Green Island through to Bateman’s Bay. I’ve surfed the island many times and had then jumping out of the wave in front of me.

A few years ago also, at Curl Curl on a really good day with about sixty people out a whole pod, anything up to a hundred, just went through the line up at high speed and scared the shit out of us. The warm fuzzy dolphin thing is all very well but I don’t think they care too much about running into someone and at the speed they travel that would mean serious damage.

Oh! I’ve only ever seen little reef sharks in Indo but I know there are big mothers on the outer reefs so the photo could be legit.

crowds are bad enough, but when the bait fish are jumpin across the front of your longboard and some of them are running into you in mid-air its time to move along…the men in the gray suits are not far behind. i’m just thankful the pelicans have better eyesight than the fly’n baitfish.

Green Island, I’ve surfed the island many times

Hey There, Personally ive never surfed the island orthough ive heard its a great left, I mostly go north. Is it true that on the paddle out from Lake Conjona (which i spelt wrong) that one of the holes is a shark pit? thats what ive heard. Josh.

EDIT: MORE STUFF:

Speaking of sharks Bethany Hamilton(girl attacked while surfing tunnels kaui last october) has anounced that there is going to be a movie out about it. well thats acording to ten news australia.

(photo taken from a google image search)

Josh.

Saw two dolphins while checking the surf at the Lane in SC this morning. Right near the lineup, but the three guys out didn’t seem to notice. There was only a small wave, and few and far between though - 4mile was ok though.

Sorry to have to tell you mate but Booma’s a kook. Basically he can’t surf. He paddles out on big stormy days, drifts around, falls off a few times, and then comes in. He never surfs the really heavy offshore days. Watch him sometime, he can only just stand up on a 3ft wave, can’t bottom turn but he struts around giving out this “big wave rider” bullshit. He’s an embarrassment to the sport and has absolutely no respect locally. I’m sure he’s a nice person and all that but he’s a complete hoax as a surfer!

MM, I had one on a board back in the 70’s. I’m fairly certain it went by the name “Dolfin”.

I’ve surfed El Porto, pumping down line, only to have a large dolphin pass me on the “inside”, (literally) and flying out the back. I thought I had a fast line, but He was out of my league. He may have been laughing at me, it did seem they were smiling anyway.

After I got out I watched as they would kill time frolicking, eating etc., taking off only on set waves. Not only the dolphins were a blast to watch, but the thonged rollerbladers turned to sea in front of me enhancing the view…on a 85 degree day…offshore…on a weekday…head high waves…noodled arms…salty skin…ahhhhh… it’s a nice memory.
