I have lived on the central coast (near Morro bay) for about 15 years (from socal). You will be fine with a quality 3/2 suit in the fall. I never where booties (or hood) before February or March). You can camp near the isthmus on Catalina and surf a little beach break on the back side. Not a great wave, but I am sure it has its days. You need a boat and someone who knows there way around to get to the good spots. The problem is getting from Avalon to the isthmus as the general public can’t take cars into the interior. Twenty years ago some buddies and I just started the 10 mile or so hike from the Avalon to the isthmus and we got picked up by the sheriff who gave us a ride on the way in and some rancher picked us up on the way out. I don’t think we walked more than a couple of miles.
