I don’t know what you mean with “inconsistent” surf, but I can tell you that it won’t be like surfing the ocean.
In the mediterranean we only have wind swells, and the distances are not as big as in the ocean.
But still you can find some good spots here. Liguria (the Genoa county) has several spots but they are few and small. With many people in the water. All the people are riding shortboards here.
Tuscany (the Florence county) and Lazio (the Rome county)have many spots.
Stilll, the best place to surf (I heard talking about “polinesian quality waves” and if you see any pictures maybe you’ll agree) is the west coast of Sardinia. Short and long boards are used there.
