Surfline No longer free @ swell.com

I just tried to get a forecast from surfline on swell.com. It has been free (once you give them your mailing address for a catalog, and that they will sell to others) for a long time. Now they want $4.95 a month or $30.00 a year. That sucks. I know some of you will say that they are providing a service and they have a right to charge for it, which they do. But isn’t surfline just something else to augment their page so that people will come back every day and keep their hit count up? A good hit count = banner ads = income. They are making their money. Am I way off base here? I still get my info. from the wam models, weather radio and noaa site, but it was nice to get a different perspective, for free.

And this is only a rumor, that surfline and swell are spliting up into two different companies.Herb.

I am not sure where you surf but I frequent wetsand.com and surfshot.com for my info here in SoCal.

Try www.surfcheck.com and www.stormsurf.com/. I use the former for their surfcams and the later for swell forecast info. Together you can get a pretty good idea of what’s happening (along with your personal experience) at your local breaks. As far as I know the “A good hit count = banner ads = income,” model has lost millions of dollars by those who have depended upon it. I personally believe the only way a website like surfline or even swell.com is going to survive is by charging subscription fees. $30 a year isn’t too bad if you get 10 days of surfing in that you wouldn’t have gotten without surfline. OK 12 days…15 days? Everyone has their price. sur4evr

To be honest I hope all of those forecast sites go out of business.

To be honest I hope all of those forecast sites go out of business. yup i second that all you need is a shortwave, a buoy and a little book they give out free at the surfshops

And after all the sites go away, ban cell phones @ the local break.10 guy’s pull up and see theres waves, each one calls 10 of their buddies, with-in a hour theres an additional 100 in the line up.

DITTO!!! Amen brothers!!!

Short wave is the way to go…been doing it for years. I wont pay for surfline, in fact I think their forecasts were off more than on. I might not ever go back to swell now, whats the point?
