P.S. Does anyone know why ST doesn’t use pigmented lam instead of painting them like a car? surely there must be a reason.
To hide what’s underneath would be my guess…

Yeah I think you’re right, when you sand them back you see alot of bog and nicki especially along the rails. I would have thought pigment would hide this just as well and require about the same amount of skill as a good spray job.
They use paint to save weight, its more durable and requires no after prep.

well I am no repair expert but I did ok on my Surftech Infinity Cluster. I somehow got a deep gash in the deck (must have been someones fin but I never saw it happen. I filled the hole with two-part foam, covered that with epoxy/microsphere mix and was pleasantly surprised that a store near where I surf had the red paint I needed to make it look good. I don’t remember what I paid but it was not $20. I know you were asking about paint compatibilty but the ST paint worked ok for me.
Hey Otay why are you so anti coil? From my personal experiance with new board tech I think that they have it dialed in the most.Just my opinion though
Wouter,
Currently having a similar problem.
Not a ST but similar epoxy sandwich board (circle one I think). Someone wrote a review of my work and said I was a wiz at fixing them, or maybe it coz more people are buying them these days, but I can tell you they definitely do ding - now every third repair is an epoxy sandwich board. I’m growing to hate working on them and am on the brink of refusing, I charge a little extra but I’m not sure its worth the extra work anymore.
Ok I was being a bit lazy, did a wide strip with rattle can, came out fine, sanded edges of stripe with 220 and taped for second colour. Ran some acrylic along the tape edge to stop bleeds, let dry. Did second colour with a black posca pen, let dry. All fine and looking sweet, just a few coats of lacquer and a polish and it’s a job well done.
But within seconds of the clear coat hitting the black it starts cracking! WTF, this has never happened before, maybe I didn’t leave it to dry long enough? So sand every thing off and repeat and the same thing happens.
Now I’m just going to add more black and acrylic over the top and be done with it, hopefully with a few clear coats and it will all sand out and no one will ever know but I’d like to know how to stop this happening in the future.
The reason no one has experience repairing them is because they seldom need repair.
Any advice on this? It’s onto it’s ding number umpteen…
