Swayloholics Anonymous 2007...

John Mellor? By God that means Joe Strummer is still alive and surfing. Amazing! He has everybody fooled.

Spots are still available at SA 2007. Keep those cards and letters coming!

…ambrose…

DON’T count me in.

What would I do with beer-drinking, jokes-telling, surfboards-design-discussing, frigid-water-surfing Swaylock’s guys? I am a serious guy with a reputation to live up to.

BUT

I wish i could attend it, actually… A bit difficult for me at this time of year (kids at school…) and a very long flight for a very short stay.

SO

here’s how I can be there without leaving home: in agreement with John (MELLOR), I’m donating a 9’4" longboard that I’m gonna build especially for the raffle. Plans have been drawn to have the board flown to California thanks to my good friend Jeffrey SWARTWOOD or a friend of his (whoever flies back to San Diego first) where some Swaylockian can pick it up and either bring it to Plaskett Creek or run away with it… Lol…

OK, just to make you drool in anticipation (and buy even more tickets from John…) I’m posting this photo of the finished shape. (Surprisingly enough, it’s a pintail…)

I will glass this board within a few days and I have some wild artwork ideas to go with, so stay tuned as work progresses.

Just my small contribution to Swaylock’s. During the two years something that I’ve been here, I have learnt immensely. I hope I can somehow give back what I have been offered. Cheers to all of you, guys!

break on your shores soon.

Here are a few more shots of the board I’m donating to the raffle. Today was “cloth inlay day”. The idea is to have something looking more or less like a patchwork. Heavy symbolism in there, my friends: we are all different (longboarders/shortboarders, neos/retros, old/young) but the sum of our differences still makes a weirdly united entity. I hope you understand what I have been trying to express… Tomorrow will (hopefully) be “glassing day”…

Wow - that is too cool for words!! 10,000 thanks to you for offering something so amazing!

Thank you very much for your kind comment, pcinsc.

See, besides being quite colorful and a shape that I know works OK (at least for point or reef-breaks), this board has plenty of soul in it. As I was shaping it, I let my mind wander, thinking about all you guys, most of whom I don’t know except through posts or PMs. Especially those of you (us) who have been through hard times lately. That board is dedicated to all of you. And I hope that those of you lucky enough to attend the Plasket Creek event will have an unreal time and great waves. And post lots of photos!

As usual, many unforeseen events happened that didn’t let me progress as much as I would have liked to… So glassing has been postponed. Here is a shot of the “gypsy dress”, as I like to call it now it’s done:

Actually, colors are much more “vibrant” than appears on that photo (taken outside with lots of sun). more to come later…

That’s so awesome. I’ll buy plenty of raffle tickets. I’m about 35 miles north of San Diego if you need help with storing the board or transporting it. I promise I won’t ride it unless I win it!!!

Ray

Hi Guilhem -

Stingray is paid up. He might be the best candidate if we need a drop off person. His integrity is beyond reproach. I uhhh… might even trust him with my car keys!

Seriously, if LeeV or Keith can’t do it, Ray is the logical choice.

Keith and I both have room to store and I am definately going to be up there while Keith may have some work conflicts. Whether you want Keith, Ray or I to get it up there in pristine shape, you won’t go wrong…Ray lives in the north part of the County, Keith in the west and I live in the central…pretty much covers it. Just let us know where and when.

I know it’s a little early to be asking this… but is there any one traveling to SA from santa cruz or points north that would have room for me in their vehicle? I’m down with sharing expenses, of course.

Thanks y’all.

Pat

I am sorry guys, things don’t progress as fast as I would like because days are not long enough… Well, I managed to glass the beast, hotcoat it and install a fin-box. I believe that I should be able to sand, pinline, gloss and polish before the raffle takes place… Anyhow, here are the latest shots:

Glassing is single 6 oz bottom, double 6 oz top.

Nice work, Balsa !

In an attempt to grasp what is currently happening in the world of foam, I contacted several foam companies re: foam samples and raffle blanks. In light of a very generous response from many of the foam people, there is going to be a foam comparison display where we can all check out samples of the latest Polyurethane and Styrene foams.

There will also be a number of blanks for raffle…

  • Kimberly Thress at US Blanks has donated a 6'2"P, 6'2"A fish, 6'8" EPS and a couple of unstringered "second" sample blanks that appear nice enough to shape.
  • Kip Nead at Ice-Nine has donated a 7'0" blank and a half blank sample.
  • Clay Peterson at Marko has donated a 6'2" EPS and a split grom blank sample.
  • A 6'4"F Bio-Foam blank was sent from Chuck Menzel at Wetsand.com.
  • Scott Saunders at Just Foam sent us a 6'9"
  • Scott at Foam, Fins and Fiberglass sent a 7'2" Walker, resin, glass, fin, box... a complete board making kit.
Thanks to all for the very generous response!

I know there are a few companies I missed but this should give attendees a good idea of what’s happening. I have a few other samples I’ll bring and if anybody has some scraps or whatever, it would help round out the display.

Ben Sparks has agreed to send along his extremely innovative “Peanut” board for display. Ray Meeks is going to bring a Ben Shipman board as a memorial. As posted, Guilhem Rainfray (Balsa) is working on a nice longboard that we hope to get over here from France in time for the raffle.

Sooo… the wheels are slowly turning.

If any of you still need to send checks, I’d like to get a final idea on numbers and sizes for printing of Ambrose’s t-shirt design.

Thanks!

And Herb… make up your mind will ya?

No worry, guys: the board WILL make it over there somehow. Looking for the best way to send it right now.

OK… thanks to all who sent checks for registration for this year’s event. Registration is now closed. I’m going to order up some shirts and hope for good weather and clean surf for our weekend. See ya there!

OK, thanks to John MELLOR (who spent those last few days asking for shipping quotes), the board will be leaving its birth-place tomorrow and fly to San Francisco. I hope it makes it in one piece and not too many dings. Couldn’t help but shoot some last photos before packing it:

Yes, there are some balsa lumbers in my living-room. So what?
