Sways crew in/near Sydney - NSW?

Hi Rip

I’m really unsure where we will end up at this stage - wife wants to be as close as possible to her sister but its going to depend on where I find a job…and the house prices…Sydney appears to be prteey highly priced. I will definately be in touch with all of you when I make it - hoping it will be less than a year from now - possibly around August but could be sooner. I’ll most definately take you up on your offer to point me in the right direction for supplies…may also need to find somewhere to do some laminating…

Cheers

thirdshade, do a real estate search for postcode 2515. It covers about 6 surburbs, all within 4 minutes drive to the beach, about 45 mins drive to cronulla and an hour train trip the city, but house prices are much less than any other beachside area in sydney.

yeah mate, its pretty much just little villages like stanwell park all the way down to wollongong, stanwell to thirroul is really nice, although becomming a tad snobby, bulli and woonona are still good, but a little more working class than the “northern beaches” of illawarra. once you get past woonona, there are still some nice pockets, but the suburbs are a lot more “gritty”. Probly try and steer clear of belambi, its a bit of a dive. But anywhere from stanwell park to bulli basically is a really nice place, and some great waves, i’ve been looking to buy there for a while now. there is some nice sized blocks especially if you move up onto the escarpment (good views, just a few minutes drive to the beach instead of walk). if you dont mind a bit of a drive for surf, you could find some affordable, quiet property west of wollongong and still be within an hour of cronulla and sydney. otherwise you could keep going further south, but you’re getting further from cronulla and sydney.

here’s probly one of the best places for a beer on the east coast!

good luck with it all!

Hey pirate

That’s great advice…I had started to check out a few houses down that way but have no idea what it’s like as a placce to live…I have visited stanwell park for a day but have no idea a out the suburbs closer to Wollongong. I guess there are still nice communities around there? I’d be particulary interested inlaces on the fringe as I’m moving from a little fishing port with a population of about 3thousand. I’m not sure if it would be the same case but maybe there’s areas round there that get cheaper as they hit the rural bands…or is that ‘the bush’ in your case? That would be my preferred option as I reallyserioiusly need some space…i have three kids and a serious surfboard building habit that needs some bloody big sheds to feed that yearning…
I’m reasonably flexible on where I live but my wife will want to be as closeaspossible to cronulla. I’m going to be looking for teaching jobs indexing at school college or university level so I guess I could head into the city or to Wollongong for that. Obviously once the sheds are built I’ll be growing my hair, beard etc and holing up with some blanks…
Any place down that way that you can recommend would be great fully received…or equally anywhere to avoid.
All we are waiting on now is the call for Medicals and criminal record checks so I’m hoping to have the visa within the next 3-6 months…and then hoping the latest we would move would be around august.
I look forward to meeting you all there!

Im 20 minutes south of wollongong, its an extra 20 minutes but cheaper again. I think i’d still get to cronulla in just over an hour comfortably. Though on the train it might add 30mins plus. Northern suburbs is more expensive than south, but have good resale/capital growth potential. When you get here, take a drive and you’ll find somewhere you like guaranteed.

I was living at Stanwell Park for the last 3 or 4 years, it’s a fantastic place to live. I’ve had to move to Helensburgh which is about 5km inland after getting evicted, but as soon as I can I’ll be moving back. I’m not exactly well off, barely manage to get by but I wouldn’t consider it snooty at all, everyone treated me really nicely while I was there and I didn’t feel like anyone was looking down on me. I was in an old falling down fibro place surrounded by mansions, it’s a good mix of people. I never used to bother locking my house or car and never had any problems, but that could be because there were far more tempting and lucrative opportunities nearby.

I can remember the first week I was there catching a train, I sat down at the station to wait and a group of teenage boys all said g’day to me. I couldn’t believe it after living in Sydney for a few years, I had the opposite experience there, even had a bunch of twelve year olds try to mug me once. I would add the “2508” postcode to your searches, 45mins on the train to the city, and my normal before work surf (dawn) would be with 4 or 5 other guys, all around my age (41), completely hassle free and friendly. Have a look on google maps and you can see there are places that aren’t far from the beach there, Otford, Helensburgh, Darkes Forest - all a bit inland but also a bit cheaper. I’d say it all comes down to what you want and where you can find work. Easy to rent a place for 6 months or a year and try it out.

yeah matticus, stanny is a really nice place, my snooty remark was more towards the new money coming down from sydney to austinmer etc and building mansions. The majority of eople that have lived theri for a while are very friendly.

Hey Pirate, thanks so much for the tip about Kings, I went there on the weekend and got a blank, and saw the shaping machine in action. Crossing the bridge to go to Brookvale might never have happened.

The place I was in is being knocked down and turned into a mansion, maybe the new inhabitants will be snooty! The “Holmes a Courts” owned a place up the road from me but sold it last year, I never saw them but I imagine they would have had some snooty potential!

Time for an update…just accepted a teaching job at barden ridge on the south west corner of Sydney so I’ll be moving over mid September. I’ll be starting off living in cronulla with family then possibly be looking to move down towards stanwell area. The school is just off the highway so I’m thinking it would only be a short drive south to the suburbs that run down to Wollongong. Like I mentioned before we are going to be looking for somewhere with enough room to build a workshop so I can get set up making boards out there. Thanks to all that replied previously and I’ll be sure to be in touch when I arrive for help with supplies and advice on where to surf…just making my self a new stringerless carbon railed cerex wrapped and cork decked quad fish to bring along to play with when I arrive…will post some pics next week when she’s done.

Hey mate, travel to south west Sydney may actually be quicker from stanwell park than cronulla due to traffic. Some of the Sydney people may know more. I’m 40 mins south of stanwell park. So you’ll be building boards here?

Magic.   Looking forward to seeing it.

Yes Hoping to make boards as soon as we settle…just started checking out suppliers for blanks and laminating resources. May be a while as I’m sure we’ll end up in rented accommodation for starters but hey if it comes with garage I’m sure I’ll bang out a few pretty quickly. I’m hopefully going to bring quite a lotofstuff along…have plenty of glass and a few blanks here leftover but not too sure how much space we will have in the container. I guess if I can’t start for a while I’ll just have to go surfing and fishing for a while.
New board coming on…got the carbon rials on today but it’s been a challenge as the blank is a stringer less pu super light. Flexes like a good un when you’re shaping it. I made a rocker stick for the deck and bottom to maintain the rocker whilst got the carbon on…seems to have worked pretty well. I’ll try and post some pics tommorrow.
