Well he’s finally getting into it, Chipfish has made the first cut and it’s just the beginning of a very long journey for him.
From what looks like a 20’ x 1’ blank will emerge a 8’ish mal in a few months time. I think we should all wish Ben the best of luck with his project and give him the guidance needed as I know you all will.

Hellow to the WA chapter. Ben I now know why you started the “Show us your shaping stands” thread. The ironing board will come in handy if you need to iron out any bumps. Maybe you could try my latest idea. See photo. It could be modified to do wet and dry sanding. Or should that be steam and dry sanding.platty.
yep…plus Grant’s workbench, to support MOST of the length.
bricks ? to stop some of the ‘bounce’!
[in the background are my 85% finished shaping stands, supporting the OTHER 9’11 mal blank and the greenpin and orangestub…I’ll put the blank ‘in’ these when doing the 8’ of rail…once it’s 2 3/4 " instead of ? 7" ? thick…]
Sorry Gray…in my fastidiousness [sp?] to clean up before Jo [Hicksy’s wife] returned from Albany, I snapped all the rail bits into Coles Bagged sizes. There may be ONE nose rail piece next to the fridge still , from memory.
I DO have some spare foam at my place however…maybe after our paddle tomorrow [if there’s anything rideable by then ?] , I can search them out for you. Are you wanting them for F.C.S. plug and finbox attachment, like with Grant’s ? If si, I think they MIGHT be big enough …
Thanks Platty… April Fools Day is still a few months away, though…
It’s good to see ’ yoomer’ [‘Kath and Kim’] emerging on these threads !
chippy
Platty, in case that IS serious [ my apologies then !], HOW do you attach the paper ? [Any shots there of the …um…“device” in action ?? And, your comments on applications and success ?

Approximate dimensions so far [based on the R.H.S. outline]… 16" x 8’ x 23" x 15 1/4" - 1/2" x 7" [!!!] pintail single fin.

I’m hoping WELL before Christmas for its completion, actually. Just a question of being able to dedicate a few days at a time to ‘gigantor’, I reckon… and not annoying you, Jo, the kids , the dogs, by being out there too often eh, Hicksy ? ] Rough estimate of time taken so far : - 1 1/2 hours. Still to come : - Template other side Planing : - ? hours [spooning the deck…yeegads !] Tinting Cutlaps ? Fabric inlay between the two stringers ? Glassing…2 layers 6oz deck, 1-2 layers bottom…epoxy, this time ! Finbox installation [single, 12" box] Making larger wood / fibreglass combo fin and / or multipigmented fibreglass longboard fin[s]. chippy
and, here’s one of me, the 2 big berthas [pre-cutdown], and Rex [my ‘shadow’], who has taken to following me everywhere…can hardly get a shot without him being in the background…or foreground…or stage left or right…
he’s a CLASSIC , though !!
[thanks for taking the shot, by the way, Grant … came out pretty good , eh ?!]
Did you flip your template right side to left side?
Or did you spin it?
that thing is making my brain hurt… maybe it’s the brick background… I could swear the lower right outline matches the upper left, and the upper right matches the lower left…
Nice one Chip. Only just caught this thread, that is one giant mutha. I thought of building a hollow wood 9 footer but the way I build em it would squash my puny car when I stuck it on the roof. Perhaps a foamy one would be kinder to me ole jiloppy.
Loooooking goooood mate more shots as taken much appreciated.
It’s not properly outlined yet…not even close. It’s on hold till I do the bonzer runners, save some money, and reshape the outline [only one side is even anywhere near 70% true, for starters !]
So , “the mal” could be sitting in Grant’s rafters for a while, by the looks of my bank account. ( I’m really sorry about that, mate ! )
