Taking it Outdoors

After seeing Resinheads “under tree” outside setup and being asked by Hans and a few others, I am putting up some shots of my shaping tent and stands. Nothing special but it works for me and I can break the entire thing down during typhoons and put into my shed! My shaping tent is 10x12’. It has netting that zips up for complete enclosure but it doesn’t stop the wind (and small bugs) from coming through.

I made side light stands that are 4ft wide and about 42" tall out of 2x4s and leftover particleboard. I wish I had wider lights but its all good. My vacuum system doesnt work correctly and I gotta fine tune it a bit so the dust goes into the dust bin and not into the vac. But it does pull all of the dust away from the planner no worries and keeps it off the ground. My shaping stand is adjustable for different length boards and it is collapsible as well. My glassing stand is made out of PVC pipe. The tops can be rotated down for lower working heights while painting or whatever. It breaks down super easy.

It that one of those fancy HomeDepot Gazabos?  All that trellis work, you should just hang your tools on the trellis…you  dont need a shelf.  I like the magic carpet

Resinhead,

I live in base housing on Okinawa. I got the gazebo on a sweet sale at our PX (plus no tax) it fit my size requirements and budget;)

I actually hang my plastic EZ square up in the corner rafters! It fits perfectly and the light stands give me two tops. I have a power strip zip tied up in another corner rafter for power to all of my lights and a cord that runs to the center of the roof to power my tools (planer & sander).

The carpet, particleboard, rubber matting and hoses for my vacuum are thing I found on the side of the road that other folks left when moving out. People move so fast over here they just leave things on the curb becuase they know other families will swoop in and grab them up… so I get tons of bits and pieces for free and build as I go.

I miss my garage but I love this little setup! I build boards outside and cheerish the experience. It is definately making me a better board builder because I have to pay so much more attention especially when glassing.

I know watch out for the bird poop.

CWRun, brilliant.  more progress pics, please.

Thought I would add a shot of my light stand up close. You cant see it but the side legs come up and have an insert that goes into the back of the upper box. With one scew on each side I can disassemble it and take the box off. Super tough lights with heavy rubberized end caps and plugs. I need to paint the inside of the boxes white to make them really work for me.

My daughter and I are building her 7’ starter board. I kept it a bit narrower for her shoulder width. She is finally learning to blend some rails! Stoked and cant wait for summer surf with the kids!

I love the PVC glassing stand.

You could have made a PVC shaping stand too.  You have given me inspiration.

I have seen those EZ-Up canopies used over picnic table eating areas in national parks.  Good idea.
