What`s the easiest way to taper decks on short and longboards . I’m sure the pros can eyeball decks as they take them down from today’s close-tolerance blanks… while taking equal planer passes off of each side. Like me, you’re an amateur, or you wouldn’t have asked. I make quarter-board cross section outside templates for use mid-board. I mark the rail line on the blank outline edge and on the template rail-edge. I use successive passes with sandpaper blocks, from 36 grit to 100 grit. I mount the 36 grit sandpaper directly to the wood block. I cushion the finer grit paper with 1/2" backpack foam sleep pad. I take the deck down to the template as the rail edge marks line up. As I take the midboard deck down, I transition it into the nose and tail. Be vigilent about maintaining symmetry. Mount downward facing flourescent lights on either side of the board. Turn all other lights off but those. You can feel and see from there.
