Teardrop

How's it going?  i'm working on a 6-8 teardrop funboard for a friend of mine.  He's pretty much a beginner and looking for something with stability and maneuverability.  wondering if anyone might have some suggestions for bottom contours to achieve this?

Thanks,

Joe

Whashappenin Joe,

I’d go for a very basic bottom: flat with a little bit of belly towards the middle of the board.

By “belly” I mean a convex contour (as opposed to a concave contour).

What did you have in mind?

Thanks.  I wasn't sure what i had in mind...i was thinking more along the lines of a single concave with vee in the tail.  Im in Texas, and surf here is pretty week and disorganized...the outline of the board is approx.  20.5".  I wanted it little wider but i'm using a thick EPS blank and used a skil saw to cut the outline...didn't work very well and had a big gouge in the outline...so i had to retemplate.  i was thinking 3" thick would be good to ensure catching a lot of waves....

what do you think?

Yeah, go with- either flat to vee, or concave to vee… You CAN’T go wrong!
But another suggestion: make sure you have a nice low/smooth rocker through out. Maybe a little more tail rocker if you or your rider likes to crank out turns? A bit of vee in tail will def assist in turns as well. More so then a flat tail- that’s for sure! Good luck.

A tear-drop is not the most efficient wave-catching outline (unless you are going to make a Roy-board!).  The wider the tail, the more surface area and bouyancy and, therefore, lift.  Lift the tail and the board will catch more waves.  You can offset instability by using fins near the tail’s corners.  Bottom contours will cause drag and slow the board down unless the rider keeps the board turning and driving.
