Gonna be in Texas for next six months. Looking for someone who has personal experience with a Texas based shaper who can make me a quality eps knock-off of something along the lines of the Rusty Pirannah or Webber Afterburner. Appreciate any input. texmex
Depends on where you’ll be. Corpus, go see Mike Doyle. Houston, see Fry.
Both have famous-sounding names, but aren’t actually “the” Mike Doyle, or Frye (with an "e). Both are quite capable shapers, and have much experience with shaping for Texas waves. They both have good websites with plenty of information on them, too.
I wouldn’t ask for a knock-off of anything, though. Just work with them to get something that you’ll be happy with.
Tom Sterne (Tomas) can make you something nice. He has experience with epoxy and shapes some fine split tail (and other) boards. Lots of his stuff in the board resources section or here.
Doyle (Corpus) or Sterne (Victoria). Or Shwuz (Corpus), if you want something realllly nice, MR-ish, that’ll last a decade or so.
I thought you bowed out, but you’re still haunting the haunts, J! ; )
I’ve been impressed by Henry Fry’s boards, out of Houston. He has been working with epoxy about as long as anybody.
hope that’s of use
doc…
I picked up a used board by James Fulbright that is one of my favorite. Not sure where in Texas he is, or if he still shapes. I just saw his name in the wave pool article in this month’s Surfer mag.
