thank goodness for helmets , and rounded noses [on boards]

today , while taki8ng water photos , I was a little too close and in the way of Ross ['P-Co']'s flight path

copped the nose of his board nice and hard to my head .

like I say , thank goodness for helmets eh ?

If I had done the usual [shaved my head] and worn no helmet , and it had been a needle nosed thruster , like a lot of my mates ride , it would have been a much different [and more serious] outcome , I know .

So, any other water photogs out there ...give serious thought to wearing a helmet , eh ?  Especially in fairly crowded lineups.

Even WITH the helmet on , I have still been a bit 'off balance' all day , so I will give it a rest tomorrow

The good news was / is ...

1. the run of swell and BEAUTIFUL conditions has continued ALL this week , and tomorrow looks like another 'groundhog day ' , too ...

2. I got some nice shots , prior to the collision .

3. Ross still had one layer of glass covering his nose rail lap , so was able to continue surfing !

I , however , only took three more waves photos , and went and sat on the beach for a while , prior to walking back home . [ A couple of the photos may end up on my "chip's picks" thread , for those interested ? ]

cheers !

  ben

...sorry , guys ....I don't know WHY this posted TWICE ?

[ please ignore this one ]

  cheers !

  ben

glad you’re ok, the pics look great!

thanks , Huck !

  It's now 9am saturday morning , and I feel a bit 'weird in the head ' [a bit more than 'normal' , I mean ?!  ha!] ...

So , if I go to the beach today ....

I will just take 'far away' shots , from the beach , maybe ?  [ A safer option , anyway , given the large numbers of  frothing "weekend surfers" ,  paddling over the top of each other !]

  cheers !

I hope you're not on blood thinners - I had a friend on blood thinners, hit his head while surfing, woke up with a headache the next day.  Decided to go to the emergency room to have it looked at, died in the hospital.  Aneurism!

I tend to go with round or blunt noses on my boards, for that reason.  Haven't gone to wearing a helmet yet, I'm thinking about it, 'tho.

....  geez that's horrible and sudden , what happened to your friend , I'm very sorry to hear that , mate ...

"I hope you're not on blood thinners "

nup. Not unless saltwater in my veins [?and between my ears? ...some would say] , counts as 'blood thinners' ??

"keep surfing , stay safe"  ben

p.s. - "huck" , not huckleberry now ?   I noticed , mate ?!

I read somwhere that George Greenough’s new crusade is for rounded noses…and that no one is listening to him. Slaves to fashion…

In the same article it was stated that if Bob Simmons were alive today he for sure would not be noodling around on 60 year old designs (like the folks so enamored of his designs these days), but would be borrowing from the most advanced aerospace composites…

Stay safe Chip.  I love the water pics.  I love the color of the water in your neck of the woods…so inviting…

How can you say that?  I'm listening to him.

Yeah, and if Greg Noll were shaping surfboards today, he wouldn't be making longboards with D-fins, he'd be making....oh yeah, he is shaping surfboards today, longboards with D-fins!  Shows they can't really say what Simmons would be doing.  I don't think anyone is building Simmons style boards with the idea that they're forging the way to a new horizon, just giving the nod of approval to a fun shape that has proven itself for a certain type of surfing.

I don't think Simmons was necessarily focused on being 'cutting edge' either.  From what I've heard about him, he was kind of a loner and a bit of an agro dude, mainly just interested in developing boards that worked better for himself, with his bad arm.  He worked in the aerospace industry (I think as an engineer?) so he just used what he knew to try to develop lighter boards that were more maneuverable than the standard large heavy single fin longboards popular at the time.

 ..."huck" , not huckleberry now ?   I noticed , mate ?!

[/quote]

Yes Chip, thanks to Mike Paler and Keith Melville.  It was the name I wanted from the beginning, but it was taken.  However, since the original Huck was long gone and not an active part of Swaylocks anymore, they were kind enough to make the switch for me.  I'm very happy about that - I've been Huck on internet forever.

Years ago when I started posting photos of my remodeling projects on Fine Homebuilding's forum, I was Huck.  The name stayed with me, and I sign all my boards "Huck".  I've always preferred Huck to Huckleberry, and used to cringe when I'd get called "Mr. Berry", or worse yet, "Huckle" LOL!  I'm Huck on the wood board builders' forum too, but it was taken on Surfermag.com's forum, so I'm Doghouse over there.

Oh, and I almost forgot to ask...how did the helmet fare?

thanks huckle !

the helmet cracked , and my hair is wedged in there  [like a scalping...a souvenir]

[  yes  of course I took photos ...]

thanks for asking , mr. berry [ are your kids named 'rasp' ,  and 'straw , and , better still ...'mul[l]' ?

Well thank you for asking about my kids!  No, they're not named Rasp, Straw, or Mull - however, my twin brother is named Chuck.  They always referred to us as Huck and Chuck Berry.  He, being the darker complected of the two of us, was also called the black Berry of the family.

.....excellllenttttt !!

like todd and roddd 'hey diddly ho neighbourino' flanders'sss   kids , nearly !

  well tickle me diddly pink

  cheers

ben

six days later , headaches , funny balance , trouble sleeping , head hurts  eyes sore ...hmmm ...

the price of closeup water shots ? [only thing i'm REALLY spewing about ? I didn't FILM  the wave / moment of impact ...only got three photos [too early]

oh well, i WON'T go looking for this situation again ...chalk it up to 'experience' , i think !

  cheers

  ben
