THANK you , 'Surffoils' !

hi Brett !

just to let you know ...

(the sun has now re-appeared , and I am home this arvo ...so...)

your 'fin attachments' you kindly sent [thanks again !] got glued on to a pair of M3 templates , at 2.11pm . [35 minutes ago]

How long does the epoxy glue take to really harden / gel , to full strength , mate ?

I'm leaving them in the shade at the moment , but after an hour or so , would sunlight help "speed up" the process ?

or

should I leave them overnight , and wait till TOMORROW to put them in the sun , I wonder ?

  Cheers Brett !

Good to hear you got them and youve put them on some fins ! If you like them or have any design suggestions , I'll make a few sets for other Sway guys to try.

Dont know how long it takes for epoxy to 100% set, someone else might know...

But I reckon as long as the 2 part is mixed thoroughly, it should achieve max strength within 1 or 2 days.

Keep us updated Ben, Id be keen to hear what you felt riding them.

Ive made a bigger set just to see what happens when I upsize the design. Theyre about 2.5 times bigger area so I'll probably skip across the water on them.

WOW !!!

and I wonder what a bigger based one for keels would go like ?

well, after two hours , I put the finlets in the sun for about 1/2 hour , just before the sunset ...not a LOT of heat in it , this time of year [ only a few days before our southern hemisphere winter starts , for those of you reading this in your [soon to start your summer ] northern hemisphere !]

there's a few more photos coming...

  cheers !

Well, here are some of the things that I noticed / thought of , glueing the 'attachments' onto the M3's , and waiting for it to bond .... just  some of my thoughts/ gut feelings , Brett ....

1] the 'inside foil curve' of the M3's , combined with the slightly "hollowed out" insides of your finlets. The bond between them ...might not be 100 % as a result ?  I probably 'should' have attached them to a flat inside edge fin , really [like on my homemade fibreglass ones?]  Because that  might provide a more thorough /  flat to flat surface bond [if you don't have that slight curve to the inside edge of your finlets too, perhaps?] ? And perhaps that 'may' give more strength,  as a result ? [ I guess , really , only lots of waves / time will tell eh,  Brett ?]

2] "G10" material / epoxy two-part glue / finlet material [?epoxy resin , moulded , with some glass cloth thrown into the mix ?] ... I was just wondering if the different types of materials used cause a strong enough bond ?  ...again , I guess only waves ridden will tell [if they stay in one piece] ....

**** Again , if 'Soul'n'power' or someone else here , among the 15000 or so onlookers , can have a go at moulding these  fins ....***

lighter weight , stronger?  , no / less weak points in them , and [ most importantly !] ....faster / less labour intensive to make ...then STOKED !!

That way , more of these can be made , and tested , quicker, by far more people . So then , you'll [hopefully] get a better,  WORLDWIDE picture of how they perform too, that way , hopefully , Brett ?

  so ...

you creative sways people out there who have the technology to do that , and like a challenge [I hope I speak for you too, Brett? when I say ] ....

"grab the ball , and RUN with it !!"

and preferably , give recognition to Brett , for coming up with  both this design , and the even funkier 'GRANGE' system of fins.

I just want to  say " thank you"  for letting me be a part of this process , Brett   [even if it was initially as an interested internet onlooker , on the other side of Australia , and soon , hopefully ....as a person RIDING / TRYING THEM OUT ! ]

I  hope that , while my brother Simon is here , that we  get at least a  few days of rideable , quality waves . Perhaps then he could get to try this setup out in HIS board[s] too ??

 ....to be continued ....

      cheers !

        ben

Finished a set of the larger ones just to see how much area horizontal area can be used. I think its too much area but it cant hurt to see what happens with that much extra lift around the fins.

Has anyone tried other glue like Araldite to stick things to fins ??

funny you should ask that , Brett !!

because a mate gave me some "silastic"  ...I wonder if that would work ?

on your longer attachments pictured above , do you think they may also need a wider base to stay on better , because there "may" be extra pressure where they meet the fin , because of their larger size , do you reckon ?

I look forward to hearing how these new ones go .

With the fins I have curing from yesterday arvo's glue up , I'm hoping we get some swell here on sunday , because from monday onwards , they've forecast strong onshores and rain till at least friday ? [my brother will think he's back home [vicco] already , with that weather here in perth]

  ben

Looking forward to your ride report!

Hi Ben + Parick, I dont think silastic would be strong enough, if its that flexible building adhesive stuff. I reckon it would have to be  an epoxy adhesive depending on the material the finlet is made of. Ive got one pair of finlet thats been stuck on for about 3 or 4 years and that was with an epoxy adhesive I bought from FGI.

...offshores forecast for this weekend and next week...yeehaa

fin tests coming up , hopefully , THEN !!

so , in readiness , I pulled THIS off the racks ...ease of paddling , yet still plenty 'turnable' [?word?]

put the fins in the plugs , as you DO...

screwed them in with the allen key...

DSCF5976.jpg

CLUNK went the key ! ....into the 'cornchipper' finlet ...

DSCF5975.jpg

....shorter , straight fcs key needed , with a smaller head on it . Or else , the 'cornchip' needs to be HIGHER UP the fin. Anyway , eighth to quarter turns of the key resolved the issue , EVENTUALLY....

now ready , and waiting ...three 'M3's on it ... a 'normal' back fin , with the two sideys looking funky , maaan ....

Young Nathan ( from the Longboard Shop ) took one look , shook his head , and said , "that's WEIRD ...WHY ?! "  [So I haven't emailed him "the grange fin" photo , yet ... the poor young lad might blow a gasket , trying to get his head around THAT one , I think ?!]

 so , now .... waiting , waiting .....

....to be continued !  [hopefully , SOON ???!!!]

 cheers !

   ben

Looks good Ben, yeah I had the same issue with the allen key but its not hard to use the other end.

Yours are a bit different from mine because Ive cambered the underside of yours more to increase the Bernoullian effect.  Ifthe effect is too great you can fill the convex side with surfwax and flatten that side.

Hi Brett !

....yep , I still think the base of the 'cornchipper' needs to be totally flat ,  and complete [ ie: no ridges on them ] . Also , I reckon that I probably need to put them on one of my flat inside edge fibreglass fins , for a better bond . Why ?  ...because  I noticed , as I was flexing the [g10 material F.C.S.] 'M3'  fins  in my hand , that the 'scooped-out' bits of the fin , and the finlet , were actually lifting apart !  And , that is after 7 days for the epoxy to harden ?!   [..."uh , oh "...]

If you were to ever send me another pair ? [?preferably with a flat base? ] ,  I WOULD put them on a pair of my slightly larger fibreglass fins , with a flat inside edge [think something around the M5 to M7 / 'Occy' fin sizes] . I think the bond would be better / stronger , then ? ...

Well, if the forecast is 'right' , there may be chance to 'christen' them tomorrow  [in about 13 hours time] ...so....here's HOPING, eh ?!

   cheers !

   ben

Ben that 'lifting' doesnt sound good at all. I think that one is likey to pop off.

i hope you get to feel the difference but I'll get started on making some more for you. Cheers Brett.

thanks very much brett !

...with a flat base and no concave by any chance please,  mr. rubber ?

[just as well the infamous "Rubberlove" wasn't around to see that photo you bravely posted of yourself on the surfmat thread ...ha!]

  cheers mate !

   ben

No probs Ben, I'll do my best.

The CornChipper thats lifting is certainly going to fall off, ah well.... !

 Yeah, where is Rubberlove ?

hiya Bondageman Brett ! [hahaaa]

hopefully I'll get to trial them tomorrow [the 'cornchippers' , not the rubber deal [I'll leave that to you guys eh ?!] ]

... hey if you are that KEEN  , I can put you "onto him" at 'Facebook' , if you like ??  [but you would have to promise to keep his identity a secret though , okay ?]

  cheers !

  ben

now I have "skype" on , I may even be able to speak to him , again ...yikes !!

Whats your Skype name Ben, Im Dogtrot Chen.
