Thanks to Segway and Resin research!

First let me preface this by saying..I'm not trying to be a dick here.. I can do that all by myself without posting up,  and I'm not sponsored by Resin Research or Segway. I've never gotten any thing free from them, or have I even won anything in the ocassional sponsored raffle.

 

So here I go,

Ok maybe some of you have done it..but it's a first for me? What you ask Resinhead did you do?  I made an EPS/Epoxy board in 2 days. Yes 2 days.  Why...not just because it was so fricking hot that the epoxy kicked like a batch of resin...well maybe that had something to do with it?.  And because the materials are soooo much better.  Maybe I've been living under a rock?  The Segway blank soaked up very little epoxy, and the Kwik Kick epoxy was super fluid and flowed like water. cloth wet out was as fast as poly resin.

1) I got a load of blanks from Ken at Segway on Monday night.  Super tight fused 2lb and 1.5lb EPS.  It finished out so nice that I didn't use any DAP FF.  Ken has some kick but foam, very tight fused beads...very nice. 

2) I used Kwik Kick for the first time. In a total application... I used it for the lam, I used it for the hot coat, I used it for the glass on fins.  

3) Day 1 Wed, 95-100 degrees.....shape, lam glass, glass ons fins , leash plug, hot coat. Kwik Kick took 45 mins to 1 hr for each application. 

4) extra bonus. Glass on fins with KK is a dream. You have plenty of time to do all layers of glass and fin rope for all 3 fins at the same time. Lots of time to fiddle around getting the bubbles out etc.  Also KK turned out super clear on the fillet of the fin...not that milky shit on most epoxy glass ons.  This would be a fantastic option on balsa boards. Using KK makes glass on fins almost as fast as setting boxes?...almost I said.

4) Day 2 Thursday, 95-100 degrees sanded, poured hard tail edges, sanded to 220, shot speed coat of UPOL, and fine sanded to 400 grit.

5) specs  8"5" 21.5" x 3"  total weight 9.75 lbs. with fins,  Segway EPS #2 with PVC stringer. Glassed 1x6 bottom, 2 x6 top. Tail patch 4oz, deck patch 4 oz.

Wouldn't have ever happened if I had a shitty blank that needed spackle to fill huge voids & big ol hot wire hacks....and epoxy resin that took 5 hrs to firm up.  Just wanted to say thanks to Segway Ken, and Resin Research Greg for making great surfboard materials. You finally have making an EPS/Epoxy board as fast as a PU/PE.

Nice. Those side fins look like they have a ton of toe in. Do they, or is it just the shadows?

Edit...nasty response. Had to de-tune. There might be seals lurking?

1/4 toe over the length of 8'5". Or about 2" off the nose. Must be the shadows. Here's another pic from the tail.  And before you say "Resinhead...you fins look crooked...waaahh"  You'll notice the picture is taken slightly off to an angle.  I'd only put the fins on crooked on your board!....I use dem dare protractors n shit

Great post ResinHead.  Love your humor.  But, I won’t be getting a board from you, just in case.

I too got some blanks from Ken (1.5 pound), didn’t spackle.   Great to shape.

(great looking board, the lost art of glass ons.  I bet you get some guys asking how.)

Two questions…

Did you glass on your fins with six or four oz cloth? How many layers?

Was it dry heat or humid? How much Add F?

I did some glassons the other day. Three layers of six oz. with 1cc of Add F per oz of hardener, like any lamination. I got some haze. It was raining, but hot, so I figured the KK wouldn’t have time to blush. But it did. Not too bad, but I can see that slight white discoloration around the fin over a tinted bottom. Maybe you did get some milkyness around the fin and didn’t see it 'cause everything’s white?

Nice board there Resinhead.  Looks like it'll handle a wide range of conditions.

FWIW NJ_surfer... the "milky haze" is likely not blush.  Blush is a clear slimy film on the surface of cured epoxy.  It washes off with water and a scrub pad or a light sanding.  Some epoxies are less likely to blush than others depending on the type.  The milky haze is more likely from Additive F, 'frothing' due to excessive squeegeeing or maybe the type of cloth.  For some reason S cloth in particular seems to leave ghostly weave that would show up with multiple layers as on a fin layup.

Glass on fins with epoxy:  I used KK resin..no additive F. No Additive F on the entire board. No need, no gum up. Epoxy sanded like butter. I sanded the board starting with 100 grit, then finished with 220.  KK epoxy sands way faster than poly resin. The board sanded so fast I thought i was using 80 grit? 

 Glassing...glass ons.  tack fin in place with hot glue gun. lay down 10-12 strands of 6 oz fibers, then cover with 6 oz glass football shaped patch...then lay 10-12 strand of 6 oz fibers, then cover with slightly bigger football shaped 6 oz patch. Do this on both sides of the fin.  Do not wring out fibers or glass with hands, let it drip out if necessary.  Wait to pull it tight all at once when in place on board.  I put the football shaped patches in stacks of 4-6 in a shallow tray with the resin...some resin in bottom, some on top. Then I pull them out once wetted out and lay them carefully in place over the rope.  Then in one or two passess of the squeegee, I pull the excess epoxy out and lam down. Then double check fin cant..if good, then I take my gloved hand, dip finger in excess epoxy and run a smooth bead over the fin fillet and fillwobbles or bubble lines, etc, etc.  Once again the word is "do not over work the epoxy"

I didn’t realize you were supposed to do two layers of fin rope sandwiched.  I defer to your expertise, but seems like overkill.

Ken from Segway, is very helpful and quite accommodating. I’m working on a blank and he offered to give me an Aku Shaper lesson to dial in the details. Real nice guy.

Exactly TBlank..........Ken is a top notch guy.  Now that I got that nasty 2lb standard glass job board done, I can move on to the other projects.  Ken cut me some killer 1.5 stringerless blanks...plus rocker beds to keep them nice and rockery.  One in the bag, another looking lonesome.   Thats pretty dam good service when you order some stringerless blanks and you get the rocker beds too!!  All of you out there not utilizing Ken are missing the boat! He might be a bit out of the way for some... I travel from San Diego to see him, and it's well worth my time.  He's saved me from way too many headaches that I can't even count. Look!! ROCKER BEDS!!! HELL YA!!

And it's one week later and the board is complete. Thanks Ken for the great foam, and cutting service.. and Greg for the new epoxy. You guys are making board building easier and easier.

New ride for this Winter: TimberFlex!! Rocker bed, eps 1.5 ,  glow in the dark sapelle wood, no stringer,   no glass  under, 4 oz glass under top. Whole thing wrapped in 4 oz, Upol finish. total weight 8.3 lbs. 8'6" x 21 1/4"  x 3".

Afoaf- I’m suprised you weren’t eyeing the pile of cedar shingles, going, “Fins!”

Yep...Had the California reef in mind when dem was made.  I got another one.. a 7"10 that is a a squished version of these.

I'm really having a blast with the lightweight ,but strong...but flexible big boards. So far they have been a great ride in all conditions.
