Thanks for the welcome everyone! Hi Bill!! See ya soon I would imagine now winter’s here, I’ll make a pt of it.

chipfish I figured you must be related to Simon, 'course I remember him. Hope he’s well.

If I see Midget I might ask him. “Hi Midget.” (Semi friendly nod. He thinks I’m an evil Nat Supporter btw). “So there’s this shot of you the guys on Swaylock’s forum want to know where and when. Can you recall what year it was you had a beard that looks like a witch’s broomstick?”

(Beat. Midget drives on shaking head. NC rolls around on road laughing.)

haha

classic midget’s 'catweazle ’ look !!

…simon got a shot of your brother with a four fin by simon anderson , while tom was down simon’s way [shop] recently

Geez talk of a small world…

at home…a few have been lost over the years and would love to know if he still has

the negs’…

How can I get in touch with him ?

thanking you…Sammy

p.s NOW i understand your fascination for strange wide little boards…it’s in the genes !

Sorry nick weren’t the Aussie titles in 76 in South Aust?

Nay, the sth ozzie titles were in 75 and won by fitzy.

I love finding out about how people’s lives have gone, thanks chipo!

Howzit Nick, I think only you Aussie folks and a few of his friends know him as Mumbles. Yes he does a great job coaching the Hanalei Surf Co, team and he is about to recertify us for ASP judging. I also make his laminates for his boards and consider him a good friend. I will let him know you replied to my post about him.Aloha,Kokua

P.S. Did you ever know an American who lived in Western OZ by the name of Gene Hall. He and his wife owned a pizza place near Margrets river.

That photo of Midget was taken at the 75 Coke surfabout, midget ended up coming 14th. Wayne Lynch won it after surfing through the trials, I remember getting my mother to drive me over to watch it I was about 12 at the time but knew all the names and faces of the stars of the time. It was a big deal in Sydney they put on a 5 min short of the days action on tv before the news at 6 oclock, my best mate just got a colour tv so we were stoked. For some reason the white singlet had the Kangaroo print and the others didnt. Midgt was also making some of the most beautiful boards around at that time also the most expensive, you dont hear much about his boards but they were top shelf.

Thanks for the photos

Say hi to russel from MC,Iremember him well great sufer stoked to see him doing so well and into his surf culture still!!

I loved the 70’s. I remember going to a Surfabout at North Narrabeen one year (can’t remember which one though).

Jumped on a bus at Randwick, caught it to Central Station, jumped on a train, travelled for around 2 hours, board in tow, caught another bus to somewhere near the beach, walked another 30 minutes only to find out it’d neen cancelled for the day…

Good days…

Howzit Herb, I have a friend here on Kauai named Russel Lewis who judges contests with us and he was the Aussie national champ 2 years in the 70’s. Amazing he beat the best of them but you never hear about him. He is also an ASP # 2 certified judge and he certifies us so we can judge contests correctly just like the big guys. Any of you Aussies remember him. He is still a great surfer and wins HSF contests to this day.Aloha,Kokua

hiya mike !

when you see russell lewis next , would you please ask him if he remembers how many standup single fins he did for Crozier ??

cheers !

ben

…i ask , because simon mentioned he has one …

nick , giving it some more thought , would the midget at narra shot be more like 1973 , perhaps [as i noticed in “on any morning” and i think a winter’s tale too [around that year] , that he was sporting the goatee there

very interesting article and photos [and some BEAUTIFUL boards !] in the Surfers Journal article on Midget recently
