The Aquatic Ape

The latest issue of The Surfer`s Journal contains an article, “The Aquatic Ape”, written by Miklos S. Dora… over 10 years ago. Among many other things, he puts forth a unique challenge to those who would desire to guide the future of surfing in an ecologically sensitive direction, as well as in regards to surfboard design and construction. A most fascinating and poignant read.

Yeah - I just got mine yesterday. I was wondering when he wrote that! Also an article about Jack London and his 1907 ride on a 75 lb plank in Waikiki. On page 124 is a picture of Dora protégé Angie Reno burying his rail about a foot in the water off a bottom turn at first point. Another spectacular issue!

I’ll get to see TSJ eventually, but the latest issue wasn’t in any of the bookstores that I checked yesterday. Can one of you guys summarize the article?

are you familiar with the spped contest article Da Cat wrote about 30 years ago?fastest guy thru timing lights(at Malibu) from point a to b at first 6’ plus southern hemi in October-$50k winner take all??If so, this Ape article is VERY similar in nature.Definitely worth the read for sure, as he touches on pollution, alternate forms and materials for wave riding, etc.

Yeah, I remember that article. It inspired me to do some “scientific” testing for my marine biology class in high school, putting various types of goo on the bottom of a board and doing stopwatch speed runs between a pair of markers to see which magic ingredient worked the best (none, particularly). I’ll keep looking for TSJ…
