The Boardroom in Del Mar

Just wanted to draw your attention because I know that many of you will attend this event. As you may (or may not) know, this year’s “Icons of Foam” challenge is honoring Ben Aipa and, for the first time, three shapers have been randomly selected among those who volunteered to participate. These three add to the list of shapers selected by ben Aipa himself and to Matt Calvani who was last year’s winner.

When I read about that some time ago, I sent a message to my friend Axel Lorentz, telling him that he should try his luck at it. For those who remember, Axel is the guy who shaped this finless prototype called “The Enterprise” that I posted here a few years ago. He is an excellent shaper, currently working at the Pukas factory in Spain. Well, to make a long story short, Axel sent in his application form just for fun, without hoping too much and, against all odds, his name got drawn. So he is flying to California next week to compete against some of the best shapers in the world, trying to best replicate a Ben Aipa’s “Sting”.

I thought that it would be nice if some Swaylock’s guys would watch him shape and maybe support him; I would have loved to go myself but couldn’t make it right now.

Counting on you all so that this poor frenchy guy doesn’t feel alone and lost, ha-ha… Actually, he’s not that kind of guy but some friendly support never hurt anybody.

Here are a few photos of “The Enterprise”, just to remind you. And one of Axel shaping at the last “Surfing Art by Shapers” expo. Thanks for your help!

(I think that Axel is scheduled to shape on Sunday at 12 PM)

Balsa, thanks for putting that up. Brilliant.

All the best

Aloha Balsa,

I remember the photo, what I don’t recall is if there was ever a ride report on the board.    As a shape, that is a tour de force.    True freeform sculpture.

Bill

I am also curious about the result of the Enterprise’s performance.

Yes, Bill, there was. Attached are a few photos of the first test ride. From what I remember, Axel later cut the stingray tail and said that it helped with manoeuverability. Feel free to ask him about the board’s performance if you can meet him.

Here is the link to the previous post about “The Enterprise”: http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/enterprise In page 2, Axel gives a report of having the board tested in Morocco by two really good guys.

Yep, I’ll be there.

Looks like your friend was one of the top 3, hope he had a great time at the show.

From what he wrote on FB, it looks like he enjoyed it a lot and was very happy to end up in the top 3 with Roger Hinds and Matt Calvani.

At least, HE finished in time and didn’t forget his planer…
