The "bushfire fish" with the 5 fin setup .....

Hi Ben,

yeah, I’ve thought about a bigger center fin (get out of my head, would you?). My idea was

to cluster the rear fins together, in parallel to act as a lower-drag option to a raked center fin.

I also placed the fins in from the rail quite a bit, they are only about 3 inches apart. The board

feels very stable, and more thruster-like than quad-like. All 3 rear fins are symmetrically foiled.

Front fins are larger than typical thrusters- Future fins FG quad fronts.

I want to do more tests!!!

Hey Kirk,

it’s Sunday morning and it has been raining since yesterday evening. Run-off will now be an

issue due to the volume. Figure this front brought little or no waves to our region (Hawaii and

central Cal got waves) so it’s back to the shop for more R&D until the surf is clean and good.

This flat spell down here has been BRUTAL!!!

Hey Fernando,

the waves have been really, REALLY bad over the last months (w/exception of S swell spots, and

I live in a N swell region and don’t use the freeway system too much) so testing has been minimal.

Our zone is coming into real surf season now, so I expect some results to share- hopefully even

a photo in action. So far the board felt very positive, that is, it stays under your feet. I thought

it would be cluttered with all the fins, but there is NO drag, in fact the board is quite fast, but

unlike most fast boards, this one is loose. If I ever get into hollower stuff (I didn’t take it with me

on any surf trips this summer) with the board I will post the results.

I should note the rear fins have virtually no rake, thus very little drag- an efficient fin. The price

for this is an unstable fin (like h.p. sailplanes) and will suddenly stall at high angles-of-attack and

lower speeds.

But,

I was intending to exploit this- when pushing hard through big bottom turns the fins would work well,

then in a low-speed-dynamic (like a lip hit) the rear fins would feel like they were not there. I went with

a cluster because one long vert fin would have a large “heeling moment” (rotation force dipping the rail),

and if one fin in the cluster was stalled, it would still work.

Griff is definitely onto something…

I’ll try to get less distorted pics soon.

George

…ok George I see

looking forward to your trials in decent toobs…

by the way, I cant detach my eyes of those gals…

…and then the camera downloaded them…

I think my mate Steve got more of the ‘Bushy’…

[on another thread , I will post some shots of Ian [‘sandgroper’] , and a coupla other guys that I got talking to out there today , who were riding some interesting boards… ]

cheers

  ben

Nice Ben! did you make the barrel? the bushfire fish looks great in the water i reckon too. Good shots!

hi josh

I counted to two

on Ian’s one , he counted to four …

but

We both got swatted !

…fun view as the sun rises , shining through the lip … sidelit in the water view, frontlit from where Steve was sitting , taking the photos …

today , in mostly waist high fat peaks , I rode it with the two side fin sets swapped around …

bigger fins at the back , smaller GS fins at the front .

On the waves I DID get that didn’t peter out , it felt positive off the bottom and top.

It will be good to try this out in head high waves [hopefully by wednesday or thursday this week , if the forecast is right]

cheers

   ben

[I can’t find my GS trailer fin[box fin] ANYWHERE … might be time to clean up my flat , methinks !! …so , I have so far been riding it with [roughly] a G6 sized finbox fin the whole time , over the past month or so]

crazy looking setup but it looks like it goes. it’s a reminder that the variety of workable ideas when it comes to fins really are endless. nice to see pics of you riding your homemade equipment ben. good on you mate.

cheers Nathan !

and tomorrow , all going well, I want to ride my 5’7 stubbie single fin , for a change !

…and / or my 6’9 s-deck hull bottom Rob Conneeley '69 single fin …stay tuned ! …

the other thing I "might " try , one day … is taking out the front set of fins in the 5-finner …ie: ride it with all three back fins in a row , to see what THAT will do ? …bernie , Greg , Harry …you guys done that ?

cheers !

 ben

I LIKE IT !!!

Keep the brains rollin’ Chips !

Geeeez…my name is comin’ up too much here…gotta go get some sleep per Mad Mexie Doctor’s orders…dream about Grace(who ? very nice indeed !)…naw that’ll get me in trouble w/ my wife…even in dreamland…maybe someone could keep her busy while I sleep…lol.

thanks herb …

here’s some more of me kneeling …

“…you cain’t always get what you w-a-a-a-n-t…” [Mick Jagger]

ha ha ha !!! …chipfish61 is a complete kook !!

…this is a kooky stance , eh ?

but I like the position the board is in , at least .

( Now , if I can just get the knees and ankles and lower back to co-operate , I might get a crouch and a tube happening , at some stage , hopefully !)

trim…

You know chips,

My Predator 2 looks alot like your bushfire in shape and color, just tri-fin it w/ Superchargers and it would be the same board…yay,ya,ya,pictures I know,I know…

cool , maan …photos , preeease !

[I saw this effect in a Jack McCoy movie [?“green iguana” ?], and always wondered HOW he did it …now , thanks to my clever scientist mate “sandgroper” , HERE is a "still " distorted version …cheers , eno !]

 ben

That’s how I see all the time…

Great pics Chip…

Right on Chip…

Looks kinda familiar!!!

See Avatar

The SOS board ala Aussie style.

I like it!!!

greetings fellow earthling !

… good to see you back here !

how is that s.o.s.paceship of yours riding anyway , mate ??

I look forward to seeing your NEXT creation !!

cheeeers

ben

…and …the ‘S.O.S’ with the 6 fin setup …

…now we just need a shot of Herb’s ‘Predator2’ to complete the trifecta , eh ?

cheers !
