I’m pretty sure that what Bill is trying to explain is that in some situations turbulent flow (around the fin, caused by drag) can decrease separatation at higher AoA’s, decreasing overall drag.
Only in dead still water, like a pond or a lake. It’s quite a different situation on a wave. The amount of ‘‘drag’’ (probably a poor choice of words) that I refer to, is more theoretical than measurable. The increased efficiency of the fin, is able to extract more energy from the wave, thus making the board travel faster. That part isn’t theory, it can be directly experienced. The faster the water is moving up the face of the wave, the faster your board is able to go. There IS A NET GAIN, in overall board speed, as a result of the miniscule increase in ‘‘drag’’ that I’ve described. Think of a glider, in a ‘‘standing wave’’ over a ridge, the glider flys along at a brisk pace without losing altitude, because of the lift and AoA of the wing, into the ‘‘standing wave.’’ And, yes, I’ve flown gliders, as well as singles, and twins. I’ve been a licensed pilot for 48 years, and building boards for even longer.

Just think of it this way , if we were able to eliminate useless comments from people who have no interest in the subject being discussed, we might be able to eliminate most of the real hot air on many of the threads here, making it better for everyone.
