The Custom Customer

I know there was a thread somewhere about the ‘typical surfboard customer’, but I couldn’t find it to add this to it. So…

nice.

so funny, I almost didn't click on that link but so happy I did

That soooooooooo reminds me of my factory in Florida, one guy came in and wanted a custom from me, but was put off by my ridiculous price of 450.00 back then, he then told me he could get 3 Atlantic Souls for 600.00 (we called this start-up no experience label “Atlantic Trolls”).

He came back a month later to show me his 3 new boards, they looked just like 3 stirring sticks side by side, you get what you pay for, now days they have to go through my rep while he pulls his hair out

That is flippin' great.  I'll be replaying that one.  Too funny!

I’m not a master by any means. For the last couple of years I’ve been working part time at a friends company, doing repairs at a local surfshop and shaping some boards here and there to make ends meet. I find it funny how often I get someone, who I don’t know from Adam, ask me for a bro deal. ??   I’m trying not to charge too much as I’m nobody, but it does cost me a lot to get materials, and it takes my time to make the boards/do repairs, so what to do?   … other than laugh and walk away…

The best, several times this summer when giving quotes for repairs, I’ve had people say ‘man, I can get that fixed in Mexico/El Salvador for 5-10$!’    Really. Ha!

Anyway. After giggling to myself for 10 minutes after seeing it last night, I just had to share the link.

Reminds me of a kid that ordered a board from me about 8 years ago or so. I asked him what he wanted, and he tells me he wants a "Town and Country." I told him that would cost extra! He settled for a "Local Motion." :D

It wasn't custom but:  I remember a guy brought in a very nice old log with a well known logo on it that sanded off the minute I hit with 220.  I gave him a call to tell him that his board was a fraud.  He went silent on the phone for a minute or so and then I said; " What kind of board do you want it to be?"  His reply;  "I really like Dewey Webers".  To which I replied; "Done."

Fantastic! I love this quote: "What kind of board do you want it to be?"

Did he get a "Performer?" :D
