the cut lap

Working with Titus has brought my shaping to a whole new level. Been making just about everything imaginable. SUP Hydrofoil board is mental. Thinking about posting some shots of the thing. T's been testing the thing out, waiting to get some film of the thing in action. He says that it stepped him up to another dimension. Painted it red (naturally), so freelapped it clear. No cut laps this time. Aloha...RH

That right there is a golden-nugget piece of advice. I will have to try it next time I do colored epoxy.

After whats been posted by rh may have to throw this out the window but in a previous thread on the subject it was mentioned to tape off the razor to control the depth( can't remember who to give credit to) did that till I got a feel for it .....errr guess i should still be doing that but figured it would be one of those things I'd have to come to on my own

Nice idea!

Hey Rick - Don’t know if you remember me, but we met and hung a bit at Ambrose’s one day years ago.  The funny thing is, I use epoxy, and I do it the way you do, but I thought I was just too lazy to wait till the glue ( A term you used, and I love it, so not “surferez”) to get just right, and it seems easy enough that way - in my time.

I lam the bottom first and cut on the deck - Some times I’ll do a little “putty” on the edge as I’m doing thick, 2x6oz, and I wait to “putty” any stuff on the deck until that time.  Then I free lap the deck and sand it smooth.

rickholt,

One layer of tape???Seems like acouple layers would add extra protection from a foam sandthrough and give an edge to work with, but I guess you've gotta be good to do one layer :) bad idea? good one?

thanks

Howzit Rick, Great to hear you are working with T since he definitely thinks outside the box. I am also glad that you have risen from the unknown and are making a comeback. Being one who glased a couple of your shapes I know just how good you can shape and Kauai needs you doing what you do best. Tell Titus Aloha for me and I miss you guys and Kauai. Aloha,Wildog

hi dean

Maybe we should then refrese the question?

What is it like to be a board-whore?

just kidding !

Howzit? One layer of #233 seems to be enough. I use the sander most of the time, depending on how big the board is, mostly, or how energetic I feel. Lots of times I just use my friendly sanding block and hand-sand my way around. The biggest problem I encounter is color bleeds under the tape. If you're spraying the deck you can catch that up pretty easily. I can still frick one up from time to time, so I've still got lots to learn. Keeps the honesty level up there. Knowing how to fix the fuck-ups is part of the movie to, yeah? Each one is an adventure! Aloha...RH

Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm one either! Epoxy is always sandable, but cannot with P.E. lam resin (or, glue). Best to cut P.E., and sand Epoxy, for me. When I lived on Oahu long time ago, we used to have opaque and tint cut lap competitions at our glass shop. Challenge! Aloha...RH
