It’s often said the most skilled surfers can ride just about anything.
So why is Taj Burrow’s win of the Rip Curl Pro such a “strong validation” of Firewire tech? Couldn’t he just as easily have won riding a traditionally constructed board?

To me it does not speak to Firewire being an aid in winning very much.
But it certainly speaks to Firewire not holding him back any.
Pre-Firewire Taj Burrows was a top 10 surfer, but not a top five surfer. He has clearly done better since he joined Firewire, again, Firewire does not appear to be holding him back.
And if a Firewire does not pose a noticeable performance detriment to one of the best surfers in the world, it will certainly pose no surfing detriment to a mortal surfer.
Taj is seeing the writing on the wall. He wouldn’t ride anything that would jepordise his chances. He’s now seeing that he may actually have an advantage. 8 slots higher than last year at this time when he was riding Webbers. And for sure Webber’s no slouch! One of the best ever.
