I can spend ALL day on a longboard, trying to make it purrfect. BUt; It's the first Hour And A Half that matter.
i got clued on to this from johnmellor on an old thread and i thought it fit perfectly along the lines of this thread
http://www.surfersjournal.com/video/terry-martin-and-perfect-40-minute-board
terry martin explains how when you are working with foam, no matter what tool you use, the foam comes off fast. his theory and explanation in this video is about simplifying his steps and not spending as much time on the board.
after watching that video and comparing it to my style, i think one of my biggest problems is my compulsion to finish sand the board after each step so it looks nice rather than just shaping it and doing all the finishing in one last step.. it adds alot of time and probably increases the chance of error...
if only we had all shaped 75000 surfboards like terry
Who is "Donald Takayama"? for 400 Alex.
Didn't know DT felt likewise. But if I wind up in the 21/2 hour range; I've screwed the pooch.
Oops...thought I remembered that as a quote...maybe from surfersjournal. Oh well, maybe I can make it up by bidding right in final jeopardy. Good luck with the longboard.
How would the second hour and a half differ ?

Much more weeping, and sobbing.
…and punching and throwing.
the second hour and a half is where i fix all the mistakes i made inthe first hour and a half.
i thought that's how everyone did it
One time, I was doing a job, putting a big diesel pump into a sea clam boat. Owner was a former tool and die man and he loved precision, and we did our best to align the engine and pump smack on, less vibration and wear that way. Got down to shims the thickness of tinfoil. Trying to get it within 0.002", measuring from the couplings for our fix....and after an hour or two, not getting it any better no matter what we did, it occurred to me to measure the couplings. Which were sand-cast then machined, what we were measuring off of wasn't made any better than within 0.005". More than that was impossible to do.

doc....
It’s not about how perfect you can make them…it’s how good you can make your mistakes look.
the more time i spend on a board, the more foam that is lost. i can have a shaped board sit in the bay and sit on numerous storage racks and change lighting up to 10 times, and i always manage to see something and take off a little bit of foam then end up refining the whole board again... i have to get it to the glasser as soon as i can or else bad things happen :)
Ah Yes Grasshopper! Sooo Wise for your age! My initial post simply meant that there is a point and time that you have arrived at the desired shape or not. To go beyond that time and space usually results in "Overshaping" Once you take it off you can't put it back.
Mcding, you are absolutely right. So is the boy from San Clemente. I’ve (we’ve) all done the same thing. By scrutinizing it you will never be completely satisfied. After 33yrs of building things out of wood, that is one thing I’ve learned is when to walk away. The hobbyist can take all the obsessive neurotic time he wants to work on something but in the end…TRUE PERFECTION DOES NOT EXIST! The problem is, you CAN got too far. There comes a point where it is just “jackin’ your willy”.
…in first time, I thought that you was talking about surfing…
Reverb, huh? wha? I’m thick so I don’t follow…first time?
tblank. so true. I just learned that. but will it stick. The temptation to keep tweaking with a shape is big
I think I need to eat more Ketchup(catsup). Some of these other threads (not this one) get my dander up.
No doubt. Garrison Kielor. the catsup advisory board will certainly suppress your pet skin molecules, or whatever dander is. I hope for waves tomorrow. for me. and you’uns. D

I think he's saying that at first he thought McDing was talking about the first hour and a half surfing...not shaping. I say that, because when I saw the thread title, and read the first post, that's what I was thinking too. I was feeling kinda puzzled with the wording. Then it hit me that he was referring to shaping.
