the foil

hi guys… im a little confuse here because i dont really understand how deep should i cut down with my elactric planer for the nose part… please give me advice… by the way my board is 6’0" x 18"

If your not very good with a planer then dont even touch the nose with your planer. Do it by hand with some sureform or microscreen. The foil is done by “eye” but the thickness at the nose on a shortboard can be as little as 1/16 or 3/32. look at it from different angles and make it look correct to you.

go to the channel islands web site

www.cisurfboards.com

go to the surfboard section (be patient it takes some time) and look at the foil sections there. I do foiling by eye…stand back 10-20 ft away to get a better look…youre eyes are the most important tool you will use

I have a school teacher that comes to me for shaping lessons. He has done almost 20 boards now, but he doesn’t have a clue as to how the foil/profile should look. Every board gets anti-rocker nose and tail, it looks like a re-curve bow conture. I don’t know how he can get the curves so screwed up in such short distances. The foiling is just that, what looks good and had clean curves, a nice continuious taper, small cuts, look at it, another small cut. Once it’s gone, there is no putting it back on
