Let me get your undivided attention for a moment to announce the launch of the brand spankin’ new Swaylock’s Glossary.
Months, perhaps years in the making (if you consider the time it’s taken for Admiral of Information Keith Melville to compile stuff), the glossary is a totally new concept in the world of Swaylock’s.
The Glossary is based on the Wiki model – that means that you, the reader, contributes to its’ growth and maintenance. You can add a new entry or add to or edit an existing entry any time you want. Find a good tip on pin-lining? Put it in the glossary. Feel like expounding on the merits of Simmons? Read a good quote? Add it to the glossary.
I think the limits to what we can compile is limited to only by our interests and imagination. Let’s make this thing bigger and better than Warshaw’s new Encyclopedia Surfing.
A huge thanks must go out to Keith Melville and Doc. Together, they have taken on this project and added over 200 entries, many with images or diagrams. They are the official moderators of the glossary so if you have any questions or comments about adding information, feel free to Private Message them with your thoughts.
Regarding adding your stuff to the glossary – DON’T HESITATE! You can’t mess it up – any registered user can correct your typos or mistakes, or add to your information with their own comments.
That’s all for now. I hope you all enjoy and help grow The Glossary.
mmmmmmbaby… Glosary "allusory; the reflection of language off the shining surface of our collective passion like the sunrise over the ocean blinding us… yet illuminating us to the very back of our sculls through our translucent tissues…ambrose… yeah glossary…Bierce I am here
A lap is an area of overlapping fiberglass_fabric, typically along the rails, nose and tail of a surfboard. When the overlapping cloth is roughly cut and left alone through the laminating process it is called a free_lap. When the overlapping cloth is trimmed or cut evenly during the laminating process so that it looks neater it is called a cut_lap. Laps may be sanded down or ground down before final glassing. A lap_line occurs where the lap is trimmed, or may be caused by a razor cut into the blank.
LAP, n.
One of the most important organs of the female system – an admirable provision of nature for the repose of infancy, but chiefly useful in rural festivities to support plates of cold chicken and heads of adult males. The male of our species has a rudimentary lap, imperfectly developed and in no way contributing to the animal’s substantial welfare.
That is really cool.Doc and Kieth outdid themselves.I finally learned what “Hue” and “Yarn” mean.I tried to add something but it seems as if you guys got it all. Thanks for all the pics and drawings Doc. R.B.
DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.
First off, thanks for all the kind words. The well-written stuff is Keith’s, the customised version of the glossary software is Mike’s, to their great credit. The incomprehensible, badly worded, verbose or just plain silly stuff is probably mine.
Now, this isn’t a static thing, it’s a work in progress and always will be, with lots of areas yet to be covered and more that isn’t explained as well as it should be. As well as things to be added as the techniques and technology change and improve.
You are the experts, please add to it as you see fit. Keith and I will be more than happy to help you through any questions you might have on the setup, formats and so on.
