Was he wearing a Grey Suit?

With a blood red tie and a seal skin hat!

No more Snickers, kids!

That is the most offensive commercial I’ve ever seen.  I’ve known two people who have be victims of attacks, one of them fataly just last year.  Screw snickers.

I don't like it either - I'm a big Bethany Hamilton fan, mainly because of what she's had to overcome to be where she is.  My wife thinks I take it too seriously, she says its just a joke.  I just mentioned it in case someone didn't get your drift.

Yeah, I remember when this commecial first came out, it was soon after a guy named Stephen Schafer(sp?) was killed by a bull shark while kiteboarding in Stuart Florida, couldn't help wondering what his family and friends thought of this.

Howzit huck, I have known Bethanys parents for almost 40 years and Bethany since she even started surfing and let me say that she had no problem dealing with the shark attack and she doesn't even wear her prosethtic arm and she says the worst part is trying to peel an orange and she is an awesome girl from a great family. She named her arm "Stumpy". Aloha,Kokua

Well that's cool, I really have to admire her.  Once I became aware of who she was, I bought and read her book - which is really a 'teen' book, and I'm used to meatier reading, but her story is so compelling.  Because of her love of surfing, and the suddeness of the attack, as well as her lack of physical pain at the time of the attack, she was not traumatized by the attack in the way many thought she would be.

I had already read the book when the movie came out, so I had to see it on the big screen.  Then my wife rented it, and watched it over and over.  I knew her family was intimately involved in overseeing the movie, but when I was watching the tent scene in the beginning, I was surprised to see Bethany's dad sitting right behind Dennis Quaid!

You can tell most of the surfing scenes are the real Bethany, or the real Bethany with the actress' head superimposed, which just looks weird to me, but no one else seemed to notice.   I personally think Bethany is way prettier than the actress who played her in the movie, but my friends say thats just because I like the 'surfer girl' type.  Maybe, but on top of all her other qualities, she sure is a beautiful girl.

The thing that I find so amazing - to surf with one arm!  To paddle out into heavy waves - with one arm!  To pop-up on a critical steep tubing wave - with one arm!  I don't know how she does it.  Most of the video of her surfing is after the pop-up, but the paddling and pop-up is really what makes her so amazing in my book.  I'm 56, and I don't paddle or popup like I used to, sometimes not very well at all, but her doing it with one arm gives me inspiration!

When the Snickers ad came out, I was just really offended.  My wife, and some of my other friends, tell me to lighten up, its just a joke, its funny.  I really don't see it that way, but mentioned it here because the o.p. was talking about the landlord collecting rent at the children's pool, who wants to surf hospitals, and it took me a while to see what he was saying, so I made the connection to the video, thinking it might help clarify the subject matter, and figuring no one else found it as tasteless as I did, no pun intended.

Hi Huckleberry,

I'm not sure if you are connecting the dots......LeeV surfs somewhere in San Diego.

Resinhead hates seals...Resinhead surfs somewhere in San Diego...Seals have taken over the"Children's Pool"...Hospitals is just around the corner......surfers look like seals from underwater.....the kooks that want to "save the seals" have an uninvited guest......or two or three or 65......or more......If I was a good swimmer and I had a Grey Suit......I'd eat daily at the "Childrens Pool".....You're going to see more sharks in La Jolla.......because of the seals ......

Just a matter of time before, the sharks  adjust their diets.  Great thing that the seals and the sharks are protected.  “Table’s” is a pretty cool place to get bit, but “The Shoe” is “Tables” on steroids.  Sharks probably see it the same way.  If you don’t know what I am talking about you don’t need to.

Never heard it called ''The Shoe'' before, but it's where I surfed the largest wave I've ridden in California.    The conservative estimate of size was 20 feet.     It was almost exactly like Waimea, at the same size.    That was in November 1966, glassy and foggy.    Added a certain spookiness to the day, at a break that many consider spooky to begin with.   We never gave a thought of sharks then, but I do now!

Hey Bill I had some good times out there, and and some bad, I don’t think the wave is like Waimea at all when its big, except in terms of power. The Shoe has such a big kill zone, and the way the swell mixes direction upon itself; its harder to figure out than Sunset. Simularly,  I used to surf near "the lions jaw"a lot back in the day, even in the summer, alone, and stare down at the edge of the reef, and “the shoe” is way weirder on the spooky meter.  And it gets even more treacherous with the traps, both natural and manmade.

I feel so cliche for saying it, but: you should have seen it yesterday.

Book em Dano! Baby grey suit in captivity.  White Sharks on Exhibit | Monterey Bay Aquarium

Most of the white sharks they collect have been found in the Malibu area (these white sharks not to be confused with the multi millionaires with an overblown sense of entitlement who inhabit the land side of the coast).

I should not have watched this before doing a predawn surf at a lesser known Malibu area surf spot yesterday.  Very deep water with long lulls. During the lulls you felt like you were sitting in the middle of the ocean.  There were two commercial fishing boats about 400 yard from where I was sitting. I’ve always felt immune from shark danger in Southern California, but after seeing the Aquarium’s news piece I was thinking about it yesterday, floating in deep water all by my lonesome…

Ever dive your local spots? A lot of different species of sharks around the Malibu / Ventura area - mostly small stuff, with a couple of notable exceptions.

Llilibel - If you were at the spot I’m thinking of (I used to have a gate key there), a friend of mine & I spotted a big Thresher there last December while hunting in appx. 40ft - not far from the surfline.

Early last May, I was out at Seco's and left the water after seeing a dorsal at least 18" tall surface close enough I could see the copepods on the trailing edge.

First time in 45 years I've ever been scared out of the water and I've been a little more wary ever since........

On a related note, this showed up in our local Patch the other day

You guys are missing the point.  Man has made an inbalance in the biorythem of the universe. we are feeding the beast that inturns feeds on the head porch monkey. Just wait until some little kid from LCD or Torrey Pines gets it. Moms in Range Rovers and Benz S55's will decend on city hall like Amityville. That's when all hell breaks loose.

I'm just trying to stave off a national disaster of epic proportion.  J
